4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Collection of Children's Stories and Fables
This book was on my entering kindergartener's Summer Reading List as were others of this talent artist-author's books.

This is a book I wish I had run across earlier. I have been trying to read all of the old fairytales to my children and have been having to do things piece meal. Here are many of them all in one place. (See the *search inside* Table of...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was very disappointed with this book. We had it on our bookshelf when I was a child, but never read it. Now I know why. The stories have no sing-song quality or rhythm, and many of the sentences go on and on and on. The pictures are fun, there are lots of great stories, I just don't think they are told well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Collection of Children's Stories and Fables, July 15, 2005
This review is from: Tomie dePaola's Favorite Nursery Tales (Hardcover)
This book was on my entering kindergartener's Summer Reading List as were others of this talent artist-author's books.

This is a book I wish I had run across earlier. I have been trying to read all of the old fairytales to my children and have been having to do things piece meal. Here are many of them all in one place. (See the *search inside* Table of Contents.)

Besides the Contents listed on that page there is another page that is not shown. (Go figure.) A list follows of what is on that 2nd page:

The Owl and The Pussycat

Johnny and The Three Goats

The Straw Ox

The Fox and The Stork

Master Of All Masters

The Emperor's New Clothes

The Miller, His Son, and Their Donkey

The Fox and The Grapes

The Elves and The Shoemaker

Chicken Licken

The Tortoise and The Hare

The Cat and The Mouse

The Shepherd Who Cried "Wolf"

How Jack Went To Seek His Fortune

The House On The Hill

As you can see, not only are their many classic tales, but also some of Aesop's fables.

Four Stars. Great collection of stories with one or two poems. Artwork typical of Mr. DePaola.

My daughter teaches 4th grade and is very pickey about what books I purchase for her 1 and 3 yr old, but this book was one they had gotten from the local library and she asked me to but it for them. The illustrations are lovely and give a reader much more to note as you read the nursery tales. Highly recommend!! This granny loves to read from this one and even the 1 yr old stays still for a half hour of reading from this one!

What a wonderful book to share with my new grand-daughter. The illustrations are large and colorful and the book has all of the "oldies but goodies". "Hey, Diddle Diddle," and "Hickory-Dickory-Dock" are two of our favorites.
