4.0 out of 5 stars A Colorful Collection Good for the Transition from "Toy Book" to Read-Aloud
Tomie dePaola's artwork is in a genre all its own, with round heads and line-drawn figures that look like they might have been shaped from clay. This is a colorful collection of traditional Mother Goose rhymes, perfect for the transition from the toddler stage in which the book is more of a toy, to the read-aloud stage, even if the child doesn't understand everything...

2.0 out of 5 stars Short, Skewed Versions of Nursery Rhymes
I bought this book because it was recommended for infants in the book "Baby Read Aloud Basics". I was really put off by it because the nursery rhymes are fairly skewed versions of the ones I learned as a child. Like for example, "Ring around the Rosie" sings "A-tishoo, A-tishoo" instead of "Ashes, Ashes, etc", which I find really bizarre and awkward to try and read...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Colorful Collection Good for the Transition from "Toy Book" to Read-Aloud, May 28, 2009
This review is from: Tomie's Little Mother Goose (Board book)
Tomie dePaola's artwork is in a genre all its own, with round heads and line-drawn figures that look like they might have been shaped from clay. This is a colorful collection of traditional Mother Goose rhymes, perfect for the transition from the toddler stage in which the book is more of a toy, to the read-aloud stage, even if the child doesn't understand everything being read. Mother Goose has the advantage of being lyrical and rhythmic, and many of the rhymes have tunes. As children get older they will also acquire a bit of cultural literacy, since phrases from Mother Goose often appear in literature and other kinds of discourse.

This volume don't include all the verses to different rhymes, but rather introduces the most-recognized refrain of each one. The cadence changes quickly from rhyme to rhyme, and the rhymes that are songs are interspersed well among those that are spoken, providing the best advantage to entice a very young child to sit still. A good choice for a gift or for your own child.

A happy mix of picture and rhyme. Babies especially love the repetitive rhythms. Very popular with 8 to 12 month old "readers".

This review is from: Tomie's Little Mother Goose (Board book)
I bought this book because it was recommended for infants in the book "Baby Read Aloud Basics". I was really put off by it because the nursery rhymes are fairly skewed versions of the ones I learned as a child. Like for example, "Ring around the Rosie" sings "A-tishoo, A-tishoo" instead of "Ashes, Ashes, etc", which I find really bizarre and awkward to try and read. Plus, they are all cut really, really short, only a couple lines each, which I think ruins the whole point of a rhyme. These are hardly long enough to rhyme at all. The thing I liked about this book is that it is a board book, and it's small, so it's good to use with an infant. But for the sake of learning and hearing true and full-length nursery rhymes, I would go with "The Baby's Lap Book" by Kay Chorao (which was also recommended reading for young infants). It's not a board book, but it's hardbound, has a lot cuter illustrations, and the whole nursery rhymes are there! ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Beware of nursery rhymes with racial overtones, September 6, 2003
By
This review is from: Tomie's Little Mother Goose (Board book)
I recommend any book written/illustrated by Tomie dePaola. His illustrations are always wonderful and you can be sure that it is a good quality children's book. I especially recommend reading nursery rhymes as early as possible to children. Hearing and learning nursery rhymes helps children develop cognitive and verbal skills.

Nursery rhymes have value in their historic nature, but we would find some to be outdated and even racial in nature. I was disappointed to find that some of these nursery rhymes with racial overtones are included in this book; I certainly won't read them to my child. For instance, "Baa, baa, black sheep" includes the word "master" and "See-saw, Margery Daw" goes "Jacky shall have a new master; Jacky shall have but a penny a day, Because he can't work any faster." Parents, please read all of the nursery rhymes yourself before reading to your children, and be sure to note which ones, if any, you find offensive so that sitters and others will not read them.
