4.0 out of 5 stars Great sample from prolific songwriters
Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart worked behind the scenes as songwriters for many years. It was great that they had success performing as well. ANTHOLOGY gives a nice sampling of Tommy Boyce solo, Boyce and Hart together and finally Dolenz/Jones/Boyce and Hart. Many of the tunes included were only available on 45s up until now. Complaints? None really, except, we really...

3.0 out of 5 stars Just remember...
This is a good compilation of Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart recordings, starting with Tommy's Dion-like recording "I'll Remember Carol" from 1962. Then, we jump ahead to 1966 for another Tommy solo recording, followed by several Boyce & Hart recordings. The CD closes with five Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart songs (I'm sure you know who Dolenz and Jones are). There are a lot of...

ANTHOLOGY gives a nice sampling of Tommy Boyce solo, Boyce and Hart together and finally Dolenz/Jones/Boyce and Hart. Many of the tunes included were only available on 45s up until now. Complaints? None really, except, we really need domestic releases of Boyce and Hart's 3 albums. These are TEST PATTERNS (A&M SP 4126), I WONDER WHAT SHE'S DOING TONIGHT (SP 4143) and IT'S ALL HAPPENING ON THE INSIDE (SP 4162). But until then, ANTHOLOGY should keep us satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music!, January 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart: The Anthology (Audio CD)
The Monkees, and others may have covered Boyce & Hart's songs, but Boyce & Hart's own recordings of their music are just as good, maybe better. Of course "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight" (their biggest hit) is good, but others like "Out & About", "Alice Long", "P.O. Box 9847", are just as good, and this collection showcases their range of styles of their songs. This is an essential collection for anyone interested in how great songwriters interpret their own compositions. Truly for the music connaiseur.

Some songs you'll never find in other cd's. This cd brings you the best of this incredible duo. If you enjoy Dolenz, jones, boyce and hart it's even better. Some songs are missing like girl I'm out to get you and blow you a kiss in the wind. But it's OK,It's worthwhile.

Great collection of songs (songs1-20) by the men who in fact were The Monkees. This compilation once again shows the talent of these underrated artist. An absolute must for fans of the Monkees, and those who love a good 60's tune.

4.0 out of 5 stars Boyce and Hart unbroken, March 6, 2005

Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart are unsung heroes in the melody of rock and roll. Those who know their history know that they were the two that were recuited to write and play for the "Monkees" TV show. They played and sung on the first Monkee hits. They had top 4o hits on their own: " Out and About" " I wonder What She's Doing Tonight", " Alice Long". etc..

Finally, a CD of their recordings!. A comprehensive overview including some rare 45's Tommy Boyce. What this CD offers is an evolution of pure pop for 60's excatavors.

Sound quality is exellent: Mono recordings are clean, Stereo recordings are crisp, clean with a true balance. Listening to this CD on a 5.1 sounds amazing on regular stereo sounds better than any left over 45

There are a lot of good songs here, but there are also some rather unremarkable tracks included. Fans of '60s pop music should enjoy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK pop music from the 60's, June 15, 2004

This review is from: Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart: The Anthology (Audio CD)
If you want Monkee's music with a slightly harder edge you might like this duo that seem to have assumed the role of America's answer to the British Invasion. Having been a Monkee fan, you can surely hear how much of not only thier music but thier sound influenced the Monkee's early music, but songs the Monkees did "I Wanna Be Free" "PO Box 9847" and "Teardrop City" seem better done by the Monkees. (And "Jumpin Jack Flash" better done by the Rolling Stones.) But also, there are some songs on this CD that feature two Monkees doing backing vocals.

I found that there were no songs that really stood out in this collection. They are all solid representatives of the mid-60's sound (as far as I know, not having lived through them) but nothing special. So I would only suggest this for real diehard Monkee fans who like the Boyce/Hart song sound or otherwise those who really like the mellow-jive sound of the mid 60's.
