4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Collection, Not Great But...
If you are a fan of the music found on the Tommy Boy Label from 1981 to 1996 then this compilation will have you walking down "Memory Lane"... A number of tracks on Volume 1 make it a nice addition to any Hip Hop collection but odds are if you are a fan then you probably have most of the tracks in this collection already.

I think Tommy Boy would have done us a better service if their "Greatest Beats" were just Beats and Instrumentals to the songs.

One nice thing about this collection is the "Mixman" software included on the CD.

The real rub about this collection is I can say the same thing about all the volumes in the collection... They're great if you don't have them already but these songs have appeared in so many collections and since it doesn't have many "single" versions of the songs one could easily find the albums they are on for just a slight increase in price at any used CD reseller... Yes it would mean more CD's but it would also mean more songs, ones that probably would have been nice additions to this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Droppin 'em Hard, September 1, 1999

If this disc also had "Looking for the Perfect Beat" on it, it would be the only disc needed from this set. Afrikaa's tracks on this CD are phenomenal and carry the weight. I could do without Latifah and the Force MD's and James Brown. All of the other tracks had great beats and phat sounds. The "Unity" track is OK, but I'd trade it for "Looking..." any day. I love "Doowhatchalike", but I'd trade it for "Freaks of the Industry"
