Book Description

January 1995 Studies in Jazz (Book 19)
Tommy Dorsey was not only a bandleader, but one of the most prolific musicians of the century. Stockdale has compiled detailed discographical listings of nearly 3,000 recordings together with brief biographical information. Each recording is listed in chronological order and includes the studio, city, date of the session, the name of the recording group, its personnel and their instruments, plus the matrix number, song title, vocalist (if any), and all known worldwide releases. The listing even includes any known pseudonyms under which the recording may have been released. Complete indexes of the recording groups, individual musicians and singers, an index of all titles, composers, and lyricists.

Editorial Reviews

Review

...without reading this book, anyone who considered themselves a Dorsey fan or scholar has a very incomplete picture. (Jazz Educators Journal )

The amount of data collected here is mind-boggling...an indispensable book for Dorsey fans and record collectors in general. (Past Times )

Stockdale's discography also functions neatly as a history of both Dorsey's career and development, as well as the era. (Cadence )

...Stockdale has done a fine job in putting together a discography that should please many collectors. (Iajrc Journal )

5.0 out of 5 stars Well now, wait a minute..., November 17, 2005

This review is from: Tommy Dorsey (Hardcover)
The first review of this book was too brief and too harsh -- even though the author has a point or two. There already are substantially complete discographies of Dorsey's contributions to big band music from the thirties onward. It is much, much harder to discover his contributions as a young sideman during thw 20s. This was when Dorsey met many important musicans for the first time (Miff Mole, Jack Teagarden) and started to develop his lyrical style, that has since influenced four generations of trombonists. This is a VERY important contribution to any person researching the development of Jazz during the 20s and early 30s.

This review is from: Tommy Dorsey (Hardcover)
I was exspecting a complete discography of TD, but I was disappointed that TD the bandleader was ommited in favour of the recordings he made as sideman. I was interested in the recordings he made as leader of a Big Band or the Clambake Seven for RCA, MCA Coral, Columbia or Roulette. In my opinion his importance as bandleader was greater than that as soloist.
