Editorial Reviews

The second edition of the best-selling original Groove Essentials features a DVD with 53 brand new grooves and over 100 variations for intermediate to advanced players. Students will learn the difference between ghost and grace notes (while being encouraged to experiment with both in all six groove "families") as well as important "go-to" grooves, like the Train and Bo-Diddley beats. For more advanced players and professionals, GE 2.0 introduces the concepts of groove construction, interpretation and manipulation- training drummers to think like musicians in order to maximize their full potential. The DVD features more than 70 new songs covering 4/4, 2/2, 6/8 and 3/4 time signatures, with three levels of difficulty for 5/4, 7/8 and 9/8 meters. On the 3-hour, 45-minute DVD, Igoe discusses and demonstrates each groove in multiple tempos, alone and with a band, with many patterns shown on both acoustic and on Roland HD-1 and TD-9 electronic drumkits. The grooves span rock, funk, RandB/hip-hop, jazz (sticks and brushes), world/specialty, extreme tempos, all-purpose, hybrid, rideless, classic and odd-meters. These tracks also supply a variety of fill-in and soloing opportunities to challenge advanced players. In addition, the book features Igoe's extended "global tours" that will test even the most seasoned professional's chops, creativity and stamina and, as a "first of its kind" bonus, there is a full-length orchestral play-along track designed to provide a taste of playing in a full orchestra, complete with multiple moving tempos, dynamics and feels!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great package, follows part one perfectly. December 12, 2008
Once again Tommy hits the spot with the second part of Groove Essentials, this DVD is companioned by the book/CD package which together make a great learning, reading and fun experience.
I like to dip in, find a groove and work on it as I see fit and it's so easy with Tommys methods. The method is more open ended than first impressions give, allowing a good teacher to push you through different levels and make progress easy or challenging according to taste.

If you own this, part one, Jojo Mayers Secret Weapons DVD and Todd Suchermans methods and Mechanics you will have enough material to study for a couple of years.

I have played drums by ear since I was 15, and now being 38 and seeing all that is out there, I can wholeheartedly recommend this video with Tommy Igoe to anyone wanting to learn or be a better drummer. Even if you don't read sheet music as I don't, and are visual, this is essential and good learning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff February 22, 2009
Part 2.0 is the ideal addition to part one and to enlargen your drummer`s facilities with more styles and rhythms. Tommy is a real encouraging teacher and it is fun to hear him play and speak. He is the one of drummer`s who know how to approach pupils and deliver a positiv attitude and not demotivate guys to go on. This is a DVD to improve your skills not make saltos, stick-twirling or hypergrooves. It is a DVD to learn more.
Every drummer should support and posses this DVD. Thanks Tommy!

I wish all drumming DVD's were this good - imagine someone who isn't a big name and on the cover of MODERN DRUMMER every few years - overexposed by their manager. Tommy is such a person, not a drumming 'pin up' or very much seems to come across that way.

The DVD covers many types of styles, which aren't even needed for many drummers if they have a rock or jamming background. However, I will assume that Tommy was not aiming at that market.
Tommy pays the viewer the compliment of assuming that they would at least like to investigate different possibilities. The grooves shown can help you so much by showing what styles are currently being played. If you don't like a certain 'category' of music, you don't have to use the groove he demonstrates to play in just that genre. You can take what you want from the DVD and apply it as appropriate.

Tommy explains each groove, then plays along to a prerecorded piece - the recorded examples come off sounding like jingles or between scenes incidental music in a TV show, but then again they have to be brief to illustrate the point. His playing has vitality, as one would expect, which helps to sell the whole thing to a player who may be unfamiliar with the sound of a particular drum part or genre of music.

In fact, I only feel a little sad that I'm not living in New York so I could have lessons with Tommy, as I'm sure his infectious enthusiasm would benefit me. I am not affiliated with him in any way.
This is one of the most useful additions to my musical DVD collection - I don't have the first instalment. I decided to take a chance with this after seeing a few clips on the DRUMMERWORLD website.
Plus, it has subtitles - a great help for our non English speaking friends. For that reason, together with the above remarks, it deserves the highest rating.

I have his first dvd and the lessons are clear and easy to understand. I have been playing drums professionally for 25yrs. and the grooves that I have learned from that dvd increased my ability to play in many different situations. that's why when I found out he had another dvd out 2.0 I jumped at getting it. Big Rock delivered on time and brand new sealed in box. A++++ rating.
Thanks

5.0 out of 5 stars Picks up where GE 1.0 left off June 5, 2014

This is a wonderful follow-up to Igoe's Tommy Igoe Groove Essentials 1.0 which contains 47 essential grooves that this one expands to an even 100 by providing 53 new ones. Do note that the instruction is much faster paced than 1.0, and assumes you have mastered 1.0.

The theme of this DVD, aside from odd time signatures, differs from 1.0 in that in the first DVD you were taught the "connective tissue" of keeping a groove - anchoring on a cymbal pattern or, perhaps, a bass drum to form the foundation of the groove. In 2.0 the theme is constructing a groove and the focus is on groove types covering rock, funk, jazz and world.

Throughout Igoe proves himself to be both a talented drummer and exceptional instructor. He makes it look easy, and has anticipated all of the stumbling blocks and gives tips on how to overcome them. In fact, he is so effective that he can almost take the place of a live instructor. Not quite, hut this is as good as you are going to find on a video.

The highpoint for me was the lesson on brushes. These were all so briefly touched upon in the original DVD, but were expanded in two lessons on the second. You won't become a brushmaster, but if you are new to brushes the two lessons will propel you.

Regardless of what I deem to be a highpoint, there is something for everyone in this DVD if you are seeking more complex grooves, but more importantly, hot to craft a groove. An example is the lesson on constructing a groove that does not use cymbals. You may or may not ever need to craft or use such a groove, but his explanation and demonstration are priceless in my opinion.

This is not a DVD for beginners, and I strongly recommend working through GE 1.0 linked above before tackling this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good material that should have been presented by someone else
The grooves are good, but the presenter (Mr Igoe) is horrible. He talks way too much to my liking and his style can be truly obnoxious at times.

Fantastic Video. Tommy really breaks some of the complicated grooves down so anyone can understand them. You also can't overlook Tommy's personality and sense of humor.
