a very entertaining mix of Jimmy & Tommy Dorsey movie songs,
By A Customer
This review is from: Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey: Swingin' In Hollywood (Film Soundtrack Anthology) (Audio CD)
This album features several songs from the movies by both Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey and their respective orchestras. There are lots of good tunes including "Milkman Keep Those Bottles Quiet", "Opus One", "Song of India", and "Fascinating Rhythm". It is definately a collection all music fans need to own. The Dorsey brothers were certainly both fabulous, each in their own right. Thank you boys!

If you want to know what SWING and The Big Bands were all about, then get this phenomenal CD. It presents original soundtrack performances recorded by both Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey with their respective bands during the 1940s at MGM. Most of these tracks have never been released before, and if you're used to hearing this kind of music in scratchy form derived from old discs, wait until you hear the crystal clarity of the selections here. My favorite track? The unbelievable break-neck speed performance of "One O'Clock Jump" by Jimmy and his boys. You can't go wrong with this CD. A winner!

this CD is tremendous. 'well, git it' and 'one o'clock jump' are highlights as are 'star eyes' and 'opus one'. the swinging in stereo is great; i could play this CD every week and never get tired of it. the dorseys never disappoint. this CD could make a fan out of someone who never even heard of the dorsey brothers.

Rino-RD75283 Really great bands, when the music world revolved around Big Bands. Movies! Glitter! Fun!! Both Dorseys, Jimmy and Tommy. Made some good movies and truly great Swinging and Romantic music. The extended version of Jimmy's One O'clock Jump is worth the price by itself. You would probably like Hep CD59, also, The two great bands on the smame shows from Casino Garden September 1946. Battle of the bands. Let the battles begin!!!

Along with every one else's comments, some of these tracks are true STEREO recordings! Much, much better sounding than what the record companies were offering at the time!

I recently added this STEREO [many tracks] big band original recording compilation to my collection of musical jewels. It is a collection of tracks from movie musical soundtracks featuring the Dorsey Brothers. The liner notes, with recollections from various Dorsey Bros. players, is entertaining, especially the one recollection about how the brothers didn't get along and would smash each other's instruments and thrash each other.
A really revelatory track on this CD, is "Fascinating Rhythm" featuring MICKEY ROONEY[!] playing a startling virtuoso piano solo. Ear Candy to the max, recommended to folk who love big band music and want to hear what the originals would have sounded like in high-fidelity stereo sound. Remember, these are early 40s recordings in [several tracks] STEREO sound and in vastly improved fidelity from the regular 78 rpm disc recording process widely in use back in the day. Very low noise, much lower distortion, clear and extended trebles, and longer playing times are salient features of the tracks on this CD.

You Get Both Brothers, But Not Together,
By
This review is from: Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey: Swingin' In Hollywood (Film Soundtrack Anthology) (Audio CD)
Don't be misled by the title, because Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey had last played together in 1935, when Tommy stormed out of a session, and weren't to play together again until 1953. This compilation covers the early forties, when one or the other brother took part in Hollywood films, the balance being tilted in Tommy's favour, by a ratio of two to one.
Sound quality is glorious, most of the material was unreleased before, and thirteen tracks are in stereo. Rhino has produced a 24-page booklet of notes by Will Friedwald, together with a filmography, which makes it a must for fans of big bands and/or films.

Nostalgia Galore,

This review is from: Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey: Swingin' In Hollywood (Film Soundtrack Anthology) (Audio CD)
SWINGIN IN HOLLYWOOD is unique because it features some of the best of the Dorsey brothers from the days when they were in their prime plus good music from World War II era movies. There is plenty of nostalgia here for both big band fans and movie buffs. The vocalists include Bob Eberly, The Pied Pipers, Helen O'Connell, Dick Haymes, Nancy Walker, Jo Stafford, Paul Carley, Marilyn Maxwell and Bob Allen. The Dorsey brothers made eight films for MGM. Jimmy specialized in speed as in "One O'Clock Jump" from the movie I DOOD IT in 1943. Tommy was a master of mellow sounds as in "Katie Went To Haiti" from the film DUBARY WAS A LADY which was also made in 1943.

I was very impressed after purchasing this CD. The recordings are great, especially the transition from In a Sentimental Mood to Well Git It in the first track. The quality is very clear and enjoyable. My favorite features are the fast speeds of the songs, mainly One O'clock Jump. I highly recomend to anyone who likes swing music to buy this right now!
