Wow, there is a deep side to rock n' roll's ultimate bad boy!,
By
This review is from: Tommyland (Paperback)
Tommy Lee is an icon as a rock n' roll bad boy and playboy who has married some of the most beautiful and high-profile women in the world. His memoir, brilliantly co-authored with Anthony Bozza, is neither a reckless tale of debauchery nor an attempt to make Tommy out to be sophisticated and wise. Tommyland is heartbreakingly honest and very self-exploratory for its main subject. I found it incredibly revealing. Tommy left no subject untouched, and I read this with profound respect.
If there is one word to describe Tommy, it is "intense." His intensity about music, about drugs, about love, about life, about anything he pursues leads, to his volatility. He lives hard, loves hard, and falls hard. The book does not tell Tommy's life from birth to the present in a linear fashion. Instead, he addresses the various phases of his life in discrete chapters on various subjects such as his marriage to Heather Locklear, life in Motley Crue, life and love and hard times with Pamela Anderson, life in jail, and so on. This story-telling style allowed him to really expound upon each subject in great detail. His days in jail were heartbreaking, intensely revealing, and are a great read for anyone who has gone through hard times. When talking about life with Pamela, he allows her to contribute a chapter with her version of the events, which puts a lot of things in perspective. The backstory behind Motley Crue is terrific. The band invented glam rock fashion and styles. Tommy also invented all his own insane drum kits, and had to search for engineers and technicians willing to put together his revolving kit, his flying kit, his disappearing kit, and the never-realized roller-coaster drum kit. Don't miss out on this great memoir about life in the fastlane. Enjoy the rock n' roll lifestyle from your armchair!

MAYHEM - CHAOS - IMMATURE,
By Kathryn Lynch (Woodbridge, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tommyland (Hardcover)
I ran out to purchase Tommyland because I was intrigued by the idea that Tommy was going to tell "his truth" regarding his life. But what comes through on the pages of this book are his [carnal] thoughts, which in some cases are more interesting than his own thoughts, advise, or reflections.
The biggest disappointment was his lack of fond memories of his seven-year marriage to Heather Locklear. While Tommy and Heather have been divorced for more than 10 years, surely there must have been something more substantive that he remembered about their years together besides the fact that she wasn't ready to have kids with him. There is no mention of Bobbie Brown of "Cherry Pie" fame in the book and I know that he had a tattoo with her name on him at one time. I would call this book "selective truth." Tommy, his ghost writer, and his [carnal] skip from topic-to-topic, at times incoherently. Mayhem, chaos, and immaturity rule the pages of this book. Of course we all know that Tommy will never, never, never get over the end of his marriage to Pamela Anderson. Mayta Garcia never had a chance to become Tommy's girl for life. What don't we already know about the Tommy and Pamela years? Neither one has the good sense to keep their mouths shut about things that the public doesn't need to know. I guess Tommy's [mind] is right, he is the "real" star of Tommy's life. Tommyland fails to deliver either the substance or the insight into his life that I had hoped for.

Awesome - and not would you expected,

Tommy Lee - wild man of rock - wild man in real life !
You going to expect that the book is going to follow the line of sex drugs and rock n roll - well it does but in totally laugh out loud way. Not only does it discuss his Motley Crue past - which a large percentage of time was taken up with various non too healthy pursuits, but he talks about his general life - which is no less interesting. This guy has a great aspect on life (these days) - and we all could take a leaf out of his book. And don't expect a traditional structure to the book - it certainly doesn't read I was born on .... and this happened, then this etc - It jumps around from point to point - from car sex to his music teacher in high school. Buy the book if yr a Crue fan - buy the book if you vaguely interested in the guy - it's the best read I've had in a long time

I am fascinated by the number of people on here that say that this book is "deep" or really "tells it all" and that kind of thing. Neither are true in the least. Sure, Tommy is a real person, with real feelings, but, HELLO, I think most people could figure out that much on their own. And there are other books that tell a lot more about Motley Crue and their antics besides this one. This has a different feel.
This book is poorly organized and completely disjointed. But it's a party, so who cares? It's like hanging out with Tommy for a few nights while he gets all excited about various topics. After the first night swapping stories at the bar, he calls you at 3am because he just thought of something else, then the next day you go to his house at 9am for some breakfast and a few shots, then hang out in the pool acting stupid, whatever. Tommy Lee is one guy with a real lust for life, and if you have a pulse, it is contagious. This book can be finished in a couple of afternoons, or even in one sitting. Don't pass this up if you like to have fun. Jump in there and read it and hear about Tommy's random thoughts ranging from big girls to Jagermeister. It is a great way to lighten your life for a few hours.

For the most part I liked the book. He and his ghostwriter wrote chapters and then stuck them in a book basically which is OK, but sort of rambly. I will say it was a cute format though and I enjoyed that his "dick" stuck in his two cents all the time. (You will have to read the book to see how he did that.)
Here is what I got out of the book. His 7 year marriage ended to Heather because she didn't want to have kids yet and he did so he went to a porno shoot site and let a porno girl give him a BJ. Heather finds out within a few hours that he did this and the marriage is over. What a waste and who would do that to Heather? I am sure she would have wanted to have kids down the road. Count this as his first time to shoot himself in the foot. With Pamela, he gets a bit rough with her over nothing really and pushes her in the hiney with his foot while she is holding their 4 month old son and then he proceeds to shove her and the baby hits it's head on a blackboard. Not cool and the second shooting of his foot. And of course his engagement with Mayte, Prince's ex-wife, ends because he really isn't ready to get married again and she wants a baby and he doesn't because he has 2 kids by Pamela. I don't know whose foot is shot here - Mayte's or Tommy's. She is probably better off that she didn't marry him. He talks a lot about his jail time and it seems this was his Crying Time as he did a lot of that while in jail. He talks about his parents a lot - he loves them dearly (his father passed away in 2001) and that is nice to know. And last, above all, do NOT disturb him if you see him out in public. There are several pages towards the end of the book that says over and over - don't bother me if I am with my kids or eating or laying on the beach in Bora Bora or wherever. He loves his fans but does not want to deal with them anymore nor listen to their stories of how his music changed their lives. This is one lady that Tommy will not have to worry about because if I saw Tommy drowning or about to fall off a cliff I would just let him because God forbid I say hi to him and that I like his music. I have always thought of Tommy as a good looking, sexy guy and the best of the best of drummers. I just know I don't want to meet him anymore. His book is not bad - it could have had a little more detail on his marriages and he didn't mention Bobbie Brown at all, but it is still a readable book. I liked Dirt better. But again - if you are a Tommy fan you will like the book.

Ok, I received this book as a gift. I'm always interested in the crazy rock gods. I mean, hello, they are hot, they are reckless, they have insane histories. I live vicariously through their big hair and bad tatoos. After, like, page 2, I was addicted to this book. It's absolute candy. But there's more! And I'm not joking, there are some really "deep" parts that I totally got sucked into.... I dare you not to get wrapped into the gritty details, the funny parts, the romantic elements.... And the best part is that you actually care about this guy! I mean, you're rooting for him; by the end, when you know he's safe and warm at home, with good things going for him on the horizon, you are actually truly, truly, happy for him. A great book. Tommy, I'm your girl.

What a great book!,

It took me just four days to read this book! Was never a big fan of Montley Crue but after seeing Tommy on Regis and Kelly a couple weeks ago, I had to get the book. It was crude, funny, sad, serious and funny! It lets you see him as a real person and not just what the media has to report. You may not agree with some of the things he did in his life, but the book helps you understand why he did what he did. I think alot of people in his shoes would have done the same thing. He really has a way with words on telling a common story and making it soooo funny.

Tommy Lee Lays it on the Line,

Tommyland is the autobiography of heavy metal drummer Tommy Lee - best known for his stint with Motley Crue in the 1980's. Anyone paying attention to entertainment news, or even those who don't, have probably heard a lot about Tommy Lee, most of it bad. While this book deals a lot with the drug, sex, and rock and roll years with Motley Crue, it spends more time talking about Tommy's marriages to Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson. Tommy Lee's and Pamela's marriage seemed to burn hot and heavy and then flame out, with much of the reason being the intense pressure the couple was under given the media glare focused on their marriage. Tommy ended up in jail for spousal abuse, which seems to have been a real turning point in his life. The best thing about this book is we see all these negative events from Tommy Lee's point of view. Frankly, the book seemed very honest and heartfelt and this reader empathizes with his plight. It's good to hear the other side of the story that the tabloid media fails to share with us. Overall, I found the book to be quite interesting. Anyone offended by explicit sexual references should definitely avoid this book as Tommy lays it all out there. Otherwise, pick it up and learn what it's like to live the life of a rock star - at least this one.

A fun read,

Ok...like everyone else in America I too have heard the media trash Tommy Lee for the past umpteen years now. So, when I saw this book at the book store, I was very curious to hear his side of the story. And, knowing what I know about Tommy, I figured it would be a wild, amusing ride...and it was! The other reviews are right to point out that the book skips around A LOT and at times I had to back up and try to figure out what Tommy-era he was taking me to now. I LOVED the free-style F-it attitude the book had so, that really made up for the moments of confusion. I have a really boring job, and I read the whole book at work over 2 nights since it is a really fast read. There were too many laugh-out-loud points in the book to mention...but the "squirter" got me good and I looked like an ass when my co-workers were staring at me as I giggled all red-faced! Tommy is the ultimate rock star...and at times deserved what he got. All the drama that he supposedly "can't handle" seems to be what has kept him famous all these years since the hair band days have gone. I'm all about Tommy's hottness and fact that he radiates sex...but towards the end of the book, I started to get bored of the same things he had said over and over the chapters before. In summary, the book is full of great rock and roll tales...ups, downs (not all in the bedroom), and awesome insights into the mayhem that is Tommy Lee's life...but in the end, you can definately tell it was written by a partied out rocker-dude, and not an author.
