Great twist!, January 3, 2009
This review is from: Tomorrow is the First Day of School (Hardcover)
I loved this book for my daughter starting pre-school. She was so suprised at the end as I was too! I brought it to work with me (I'm a Language Arts teacher) to share with our Kinder teachers and decided to read it to my middle school students. They thought it was so cool that the narrator was the teacher! (Of course we discussed literary elements to make it relevant to them.) My Assistant Principal happened to stop in when I was reading it and she adored the book and wants to order it for the school library. I thought it was very creative and I hope to see more books from this author!

Great book for teaching surprise endings in Writer's Workshop!, August 27, 2007
This review is from: Tomorrow is the First Day of School (Hardcover)
Ms. MacDowell hits the nail on the head with her anxieties about the much anticipated first day of school. Children will be comforted by the knowledge that teachers are also nervous and excited about new classes! If you're a teacher who implements Writer's Workshop, this is a great book to encourage surprise endings.

A MUST HAVE!!!, August 27, 2007
This review is from: Tomorrow is the First Day of School (Hardcover)
Tomorrow is the First Day of School is a warming tale for all children starting school for the first time or after a summer break. It asks the questions and addresses the feelings of any child getting ready for their big day! It also helps to put children at ease when they learn that the tale is really about the teacher, who shares in the same feelings as them. It confirms to children in another way that we are all the same on the inside! A must have for any children's library collection!

First day jitters go full circle., August 6, 2007
This review is from: Tomorrow is the First Day of School (Hardcover)
A wonderfully illustrated story that brings the first-day-of-school jitters full circle. A charming concept brought to life with rich, imaginative compositions and sophisticated colors. Max is a young illustrator to watch for. My girls loved the idea and the artwork. A superb effort. A story that everyone can relate to.

Inviting look and feel, August 2, 2007
This review is from: Tomorrow is the First Day of School (Hardcover)
This book illustrates first time experiences using words and images. Both the language and the illustrations are simple - it is the details that are included, especially in the drawings, that create a true life feel in this book.

My four-year-old daughter loves it., August 27, 2007
This review is from: Tomorrow is the First Day of School (Hardcover)
Absolutely loved this book! My 4 year old daughter had me read it over & over again. The storyline & artwork were tied together extremely tightly; the drawings matched the story very well.
This book clearly shows the various anxieties that a child would have going to school, and that they really are the same as "some grown-ups".
My daughter loved it. The story led her to ask questions about grown-ups and express her nervousness about starting school, as well as her understanding that EVERYONE, including adults, experience the same anxieties.
My wife, an elementary school teacher, also loved this book.
Very well written book.
If a four year old can relate, comprehend & make the connections between her life, and that of which is in the story, the effectiveness of the author is obvious.
