Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Drake ( Bride of the Wind ) has chosen the occasionally tricky setting of the Confederacy for her engrossing, sexy historical romance. Desperate to escape from a sadistic husband, Kendall Moore decides to offer herself to a stranger in return for transport. Any man with a boat might have done but Kendall stumbles across Brent McClain, the seafaring second son of a Southern scion--and a handsome one at that. A misunderstanding tears the two apart and leaves Brent feeling betrayed (but smitten) and Kendall forlorn (but smitten). The Civil War brings the two together for brief impassioned interludes before each is drawn off into new exploits--Brent to his blockade running, Kendall to piracy, nursing, prison and more. Slavery rears its head infrequently as when Brent surveying his destroyed plantation and the intact slave quarters admits "in his soul, he knew that slavery wasn't right" but the real motivation in Kendall and Brent's war is love of country. In Drake's hands, life on board ship, in camp hospitals, at war and among the Seminoles is convincingly portrayed. Kendall is a spunky and mature young woman and Brent is generally quite tender although Drake has allowed him some physical outbursts unforgivable in the lover of an abused woman.

More About the Author

New York Times and USA Today best selling author, Heather Graham was born somewhere in Europe and kidnapped by gypsies when she was a small child. She went on to join the Romanian circus as a trapeze artist and lion tamer. When the circus came to South Florida, she stayed, discovering that she preferred to be a shark and gator trainer.

Not really.

Heather is the child of Scottish and Irish immigrants who met and married in Chicago, and moved to South Florida, where she has spent her life. (She has, at least, been to the Russian circus in Moscow, where she wished she was one of the incredibly talented and coordinated trapeze artists.) She majored in theater arts at the University of South Florida. After a stint of several years in dinner theater, back-up vocals, and bartending, she stayed home after the birth of her third child and began to write. Her first book was with Dell, and since then, she has written over one hundred and fifty novels and novellas including category, suspense, historical romance, vampire fiction, time travel, occult, horror, and Christmas family fare.

She is pleased to have been published in approximately twenty-five languages, and has had over seventy-five million books in print. She has been honored with awards from Walden Books, B. Dalton, Georgia Romance Writers, Affaire de Coeur, Romantic Times, the Lifetime Achievement Award from RWA and more. Heather has also become the proud recipient of the Silver Bullet from Thriller Writers. Heather has had books selected for the Doubleday Book Club and the Literary Guild, and has been quoted, interviewed, or featured in such publications as The Nation, Redbook, Mystery Book Club, People and USA Today and appeared on many newscasts including Today, Entertainment Tonight and local television.

Heather loves travel and anything that has to do with the water, and is a certified scuba diver. She also loves ballroom dancing. Each year she hosts the Vampire Ball and Dinner theater at the RT convention raising money for the Pediatric Aids Society and in 2006 she hosted the first Writers for New Orleans Workshop to benefit the stricken Gulf region. She is also the founder of "The Slush Pile Players", presenting something that's almost like entertainment for various conferences and benefits. Married since high school graduation and the mother of five, her greatest love in life remains her family, but she also believes her career has been an incredible gift, and she is grateful every day to be doing something that she loves so very much for a living.

This was the first Civil War romance that I read. I was very impressed. You can't help but fall for Brent and hope for a love that was destined to be. Finally, two lovers who don't constantly fight their passions!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Historical Romance Ever, March 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Tomorrow The Glory (Pinnacle Historical Romances) (Paperback)
I am an avid historical romance reader. Out of all of the books I have read (and there have been a lot) this is by far the best one yet! While reading this book I laughed out loud numerous times and even shed a tear or two. Most historical romances frustrate me because they are always based on some stupid secret, that if told, there probably would not have been any problems in the relationships in the first place. This book isn't like that. The problem is laid out in the beginning of the book and the secret is out. The rest of the book is about the love the main characters share and thier struggle to be together. Many obstacles attempt to come between the two lovers but in the end, their love wins out. Again this is one of the best books I have ever read and I STRONGLY recommend it to EVERYBODY!

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 and 1/2 stars - Great Civil War Romance, January 25, 2011

This review is from: Tomorrow The Glory (Pinnacle Historical Romances) (Paperback)
This is a stand alone romance by Heather Graham (aka Shannon Drake) and it's a good one and shows well the way the nation was torn apart when the South and North went to war. The heroine, Kendall Moore, was "sold" by her evil uncle into a marriage to a wealthy but sadistic husband (who is also impotent) and she consents to save her younger sister. But after more abuse than she can stand, and on the evening of South Carolina's secession, she decides to escape and offers to sleep with a Southern ship captain in return for passage away. The man is Brent McClain, who is to become a legend as he fights for the South running blockades. But she is discovered and Brent believes she betrayed him. The Civil War brings the two together for brief nights of passion but they are short and each continues to fight the war on their own.

Graham (Drake) does a superb job of weaving in the history of the time and giving us a realistic view of life on board ship, in camp hospitals, in battle and among the Seminoles in Florida who are friend of Brent's. Kendall is strong-willed and rebellious and loves Brent with a fierce intensity. She endures much from her abusive husband who continues to pursue her though he does not love her. Brent is a strong handsome Southern gentleman and leader. He has both a temper (which he takes out on Kendall from time to time out of fear for her life when she has engaged in some reckless activity), and a gentle side as he loves Kendall. The love scenes are good ones.

The action keeps you reading at a fast pace and you will love the characters. If you like this one, you might like to read her Civil War trilogy: One Wore Blue, And One Wore Gray, And One Rode West. Also, I've reviewed many of Heather Graham/Shannon Drake's romances so you might like to see my other reviews. Some of hers are the best out there.
