Ages 3-6. As young Tyler contemplates the perfect present for his mother's birthday, he imagines the gifts his father and sister will give as well as some tokens he might be able to offer. Cookies and candy are out (Mom's on a diet); it's too late to arrange for a family portrait; Dad's allergic to perfume; a piano is too expensive; and garden flowers are out of season in January. Finally he decides to create a painting (a family portrait, as it turns out), and Mom is appropriately thrilled. Trapani's soft watercolor illustrations convey the warmth and humor of this loving family. Tyler's own insecurities are particularly touching, although both author and illustrator make it clear that this child is very much appreciated. A refreshing and reassuring response to a very common childhood dilemma. Kay Weisman
