Editorial Reviews

The Controllers recorded for Frederick Knight's Juana label from 1975 to 1981, cutting three LPs and a string of 45s. They hit the big time in 1977 with the intense soul ballad Somebody's Gotta Win, Somebody's Gotta Lose (8 minute version included here) and are considered to be the finest harmony group to emerge from the south during the 1970s. 20 track collection totaling 80 minutes. Tracks include: Is That Long Enough For You, People Want Music, If Somebody Cares, This Train, If Tears Were Pennies, My Love Is Real.

The Controllers were one of the most unjustly underrated and underexposed Soul Harmony vocal groups of all time. This excellent anthology focuses on their 1976-81 recordings for Juana Records (a T.K. Records subsidiary label) and features such gorgeous ballads as "We Don't", "I'll Miss You Always", "If Tears Were Pennies", "Pictures And Memories", "Heaven Is Only A Step Away" and many others. Reginald McArthur (the group's lead singer) is obviously a great crooner and the quality of most of the 20 songs featured here is such that I dare say The Controllers could have become just as well-known as The Spinners, The O'Jays or The Dramatics had their records been better promoted. After T.K. Records' collapse and bankruptcy in 1982, The Controllers recorded for MCA, Capitol and (in 1997) Malaco but their recordings for those labels also failed to get the across-the-board recognition they deserved. If you are a fan of 1970s Soul, this compilation is really a must-have. My only reason for not giving it a 5-star rating is that a few of the tracks were transferred from vinyl sources and not the master tapes. Enjoy!

I have been searching for this group for some time now. I remember the group from 1981 and memories from a simpler teenage time. Thanks Amazon!!!
