Yesterday and Tomorrow Together,
By
This review is from: Tomorrow Today (Audio CD)
A must-own for all Jarreau fans! A mix of tender ballads, classic Jarreau "groovy funkiness," and pure virtuoso vocalizing make this album well worth both the cash and the wait. GRP has grabbed up AL and here's hoping that they 1)continue to allow him the freedom to explore his music and 2) continue to pair him to winning producers and collaborators. The album is his best studio work in a long time. My favorite cuts (its only been 10 or so listenings) are "Last Night" and "Puddit," but anyone who heard "Tomorrow Today" in concert last summer knows that it is classic Jarreau (which sometimes also includes Al's infamously odd lyric choices; first time I've ever heard anyone sing the phrase "think tank"). Welcome back, Al. OK --you never left -- so...THANKS FOR THE MUSIC!

Tomorrow Today is Al Jarreau at the top of his form,

Al Jarreau is doing his thing as only Al Jarreau can on this CD! "Just To Be Loved" is the first track and it sets the tone for a CD full of great music. Al gets mellow, romantic, playful and more. It's hard to say which song is my favorite, but "Last Night", and "Somethin you Said" are played over and over. Rick Braun, Boney James and Vanessa Williams are helping Al out. I'm telling you this; Al Jarreau is just as I remember him to be on this CD and it is a must have for fans old and new. I'm looking forward to seeing him in concert this spring. You need to order this CD today!

"HONEY, AL'S HOME!",
By Huneebee (Bermuda) - See all my reviews Best Tune: "Tomorrow Today" It's H-O-T! Keep it up Al, & may your tenure with GRP be long! Least Favourite: "Puddit" although it showcases Al's voice, there's no music and it disrupts the unity of the rest of the album

Worth the wait...,
By This is the first Al Jarreau CD in years..and well worth the wait. There is no better "Malibu Sunset" music than Jarreau...and Jarreau has lost nothing in his absence. I'll be listening to this as I drive up the coastal highway....or anywhere else, for that matter. Welcome back, Al!

Great to see Al back in the groove!,

I have been a Jarreau fan since my freshman year in college(1983). The first album I ever bought was "Jarreau" followed closely by "This Time" and "Breakin' Away." This album takes me back to those days more than any other Jarreau album in-between. He has finally left all of the pandering to the pop audience behind and concentrated on the music, like he did on the previously mentioned albums. I think this is probably a bit of influence from GRP. What great news to see Al on that label! I am looking forward to many other tremendous projects resulting from that pairing. If you are new to Jarreau, start with this album. Once you learn to love him, you must add "Jarreau," "Breakin' Away," "This Time," "We Got By," and "Tenderness" to your collection. Do yourself a favor and don't spend your money on "High Crime" or "L is for Lover." There are probably two good songs on both of those albums combined. Welcome back, Al. What a pleasure it is to hear you again the way God intended you to sing.

Al is Back!,
By
This review is from: Tomorrow Today (Audio CD)
This CD is a must for serious Al Jarreau fans. Al is back and he has some top musicians along with him. This is my favorite recording since "Breaking Away" He has the same type of groove on this CD. I've seen a lot made of the duet with Vanessa Williams on "God's Gift to the World" but the cut that makes this CD for me is "Something That You Said". Al uses his incredible singing gift and adds some songwriting prowess to take an instrumental song that I already loved and put words to it. If you know "A Remark You Made" off the Weather Report "Heavy Weather" album, you'll know that Al has outdone himself on this song. A must listen, it is absolutely fabulous. Al's other composition, "Flame" is also great. I'm glad Al is back.

"Al" Too Smooth,
By A Customer
This review is from: Tomorrow Today (Audio CD)
I have been an Al fan for...let's see...20 years now, and have all of his music. To say that this, like all of the previous Cds, is wonderful is an under statement. From the first track to the last, the smooth tunes stay in your head and you find yourself humming (maybe a bit of doo-wop too) all through the day. If you are reading reviews to decide whether to buy this, don't waste any more time...go to your local music store and give yourself a gift. Al, I hope you are reading this...please don't make us wait so long before you treat us to another masterpiece.

Smooth And Silky,
By A Customer
This review is from: Tomorrow Today (Audio CD)
A versatile, genre-jumping vocalist equally at home scat-singing, warbling jazz tunes or emoting on Latin-pop and R&B ballads, Jarreau is too often dismissed as a lightweight. Returning after a six-year hiatus with a new album of polished pop tunes, the five-time Grammy winner lends his expressive baritone to the finger-popping love song "Last Night" and the propulsive "In My Music." But even when he lets it rip, Jarreau will never be confused with any of R&B's flashy power-balladeers. His modulated, nuanced songs are laden with the sort of shimmering arrangements associated with easy-listening jazz. Mellow is the word here, and Jarreau's approach, which often emphasizes technique over intensity, may not be everyone's cup of chamomile. And yet when he digs in, as he does on the gorgeous and atmospheric "Something That You Said," he is passion personified. |
