What A great CD!!!!, July 8, 2001

Drummer Ken Serio's first cd is one of those cd's you just need in your collecton! Backed by a amazing band including Jazz great guitarist Vic Juris , Bassist Takashi Otsuka , and a up and coming pianist Shimpie Shiratori, Ken Serio shows what musical drumming is all about. Shiratori takes the spotlight very often, and what an amazing pianist!!! This group sounds like its been playing together for a long time , there is such a chemistry. Vic Juris is on four cuts and adds a nice touch without disturbing the magic of the trio. The recording is modern and crystal clear , unlike many of the modern day jazz cd's that often sound dark, and mushy. (ala Rudy Van Gelder!) This cd will be of interest to audiophiles as well with its crisp clean production. (You can hear the piano pedals being pushed!). Highlights include Calypso Joe (tribute to Ken's mentor Joe Morello), Vignette,(sounds like a Ralph Towner tune),Antigua, and Shimpie Shiratori's beautiful compostions:Prelude, and I Wish I Never Met You. I first heard this cd on RTR FM in Perth and ran out to purchase it. Its the best 11.99 i spent in recent memory! I wish the recording industry would take a lesson from a cd like this that a "WORKING GROUP" records better Jazz cd's . I so sick of seeing the same names on all the cd's . This cd is proof that even if they are not a big name act the Ken Serio Trio has surpassed many of thier bigger name peers. I recently saw a feature on Ken Serio in Modern Drummer magazine so it looks as though he's finally getting some recognition . Hope they will bring The act to Australia someday . Good Luck Guys !!!
