Book Description

October 1997
Efficient but rather bossy, Sally Grimshaw runs her brother's pub until he gambles it away and she is reduced to being a barmaid. Salvation arrives in the form of Adam Cooper, who is fascinated by this proud yet vulnerable girl. He marries her, but life still has some shocks in store for them both.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Already published in England, Howard's latest historical romance (after Strand of Dreams) lands on this side of the pond with a splash, satisfyingly laden with sinister characters and dark secrets. Petite, 24-year-old Sally Grimshaw has spent her life in her father's country inn in beautiful Lancashire. Although her father, when he dies, leaves the Grimshaw Arms to her ineffectual brother, Freddy, Sally is such a capable manager that she naturally takes over running the place. Her appealing blend of frailty and spirit captures the attention of local gentleman Captain Adam Cooper, who literally falls across her doorstep, weakened by wounds suffered fighting in the Crimea. The spark between the pair is snuffed when Sally blurts out a reference to a scandalous Cooper family tragedy. Soon, feckless Freddy loses the inn in a gambling game with the slimy Richard Keene. Sally must accept a job managing her beloved homestead for the sexually aggressive Keene, working herself ragged as she fends off his advances. Meanwhile, her friendship with Cooper blooms into love. Sally accepts his marriage proposal, although she fears he still moons after his dead wife. After she produces twins and gains the respect of society and servants alike, he tells her the true story of his wife's demise. Then vengeful Keene produces the captain's wife, quite alive and oozing beauty and vice. What will sweet Sally do? Although there are few surprises, this is a fine work in the genre. Sally proves to be an appealing protagonist who engages in enough tender (and explicit) sex to keep fans happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will get pulled into the emotions with a passion., March 15, 1999

This review is from: Tomorrow's Memories (Hardcover)
This was my first Audrey Howard book. I don't know how I missed this author but I am going back for more. Sally Grimshaw is unlike any heroine I have met and one so real she leaps off the pages. This does not mean that I always liked what she was doing and agreed with how she faced situations. When faced with her biggest tragedy, I found myself angry at Sally but at no time could I abandon her. Audrey Howard has created characters of tremedous depth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Audrey Howard, November 7, 2008
By
This review is from: Tomorrows Memories (Paperback)
This is yet another example of Ms. Howard's ability to wrap you in a story that you cannot put down. A compelling page turner, Tommorrows Memories tells the tale of the Grimshaw Arms and, in particular, Sally Grimshaw, inkkeeper in all but name. When her feckless brother loses the home she loves, Sally must make her own way in the world...

The plot rises and falls like a rollercoaster and the character development is thorough and intriguing. I would highly recommend this book. To the earlier reviewer who asked why Ms. Howard would paint these characters in such a positive light only to show the negative outcome in a future novel, I say this -

That is what makes this author great! Her characters link up in many books and, much like in reality, nobody is perfect. A true Howard addict can spot the cross references when reading the books. Indeed, they look for them! There are several legendary(Fictitious)families whose names pop up in several of her novels.

Buy the book and set aside a long weekend. You won't regret it!

3.0 out of 5 stars If you want to pass some time, December 2, 1999

This review is from: Tomorrow's Memories (Hardcover)
This book was an easy read and passed some time, but I don't see why Audrey Howard gets us to like the main character so much and then in a book set 20 years later the family is having a terrible time of it.
