The plot of this book is as described elsewhere.
Whether you read Radclyffe's series books, like the Justice series or the Honor series or the Provincetown series, or you read one of her stand-alone romances, you can not go wrong. I have been reading lesbian fiction for many years, and can honestly say that I have never come across a writer that has so affected me. Her characters are strong, intelligent, and romantic. Naysayers will say that Radclyffe's characters are too perfect almost never flawed - either in looks or character. That may be true, but aren't you tired of the genre's penchant for ordinary? Radclyffe's characters are always enchanting, intoxicating, enticing, and intense. The stories, particularly in the series books, are all first class. Most of her series books are page-turners. And in two of the books, I actually turned to the last page to make sure that the main characters survived - something I never do. Radclyffe let us believe, at least for the duration of each of her books, that the grand passion, the true love, the happy-ever-after are all possible. She lets us believe that being a strong, intelligent woman does not mean that we will be alone and/or isolated. The only caveat I have is to read the series books in order. And if you enjoy watching a writer grow, then read the non-series books in the order they were written and watch Radclyffe's talent grow before your very eyes.

Awesome and heart wrenching,

Once again Radclyffe has written a book where you can feel the emotions of the characters.Adrienne has escaped her own tortured world, expecting to be left alone, but along comes Tanner... Radclyffe's character development and love scenes are the best in lesbian fiction today. You become invested in the characters and want to know if there is a happy ending.

Not Up to Rad's Usual Standard...,
By
This review is from: Tomorrow's Promise (Paperback)
For only the second time, this reader is giving a 4-star rating to a Radclyffe book. In `Tomorrow's Promise,' Rad introduces Adrienne Pierce. Adrienne is a recent survivor of a breast cancer scare during which she had a single mastectomy. Her lover of several years became distant and her career was put on the back burner. Adrienne decides to spend the summer alone on Whitley Point, a secluded semi-private island off the coast of Maine. There, she meets the enigmatic Tanner Whitley - wild child and heir to the Whitley fortune.
Tanner is soon enamored by older Adrienne and the women find themselves falling into a tentative love relationship. Tanner is convinced Adrienne is there to stay and is devastated when Adrienne decides to return to her regularly-scheduled life. The book seems to end abruptly without closure to many of the issues introduced by the author. There is not enough time allowed (i.e., only a page or two) for the characters to embrace their future. Neither the characters of Adrienne nor Tanner seem fully developed. Only Tanner's past seems to have any dimensionality. Adrienne's only includes her career in the military and her estranged former lover/wife. As with any Radclyffe book, no collection of lesbian fiction is complete without including this one. However, it just doesn't seem to rise to her standard level of excellence.

What makes Radclyffe a great writer is her character development. I first read this book on-line (like most of her books) and was really impressed. The two main characters are both interesting and pretty believable. I will say that her two main characters in most of her books have the same feel to them, but when you enjoy something a lot it doesn't matter how many times you experience it. The ending feels incomplete in that i'd like to know what comes next, so i'm still hoping for a sequel. Also, check out her Love & Honor and Safe Harbor series if you enjoy this one.

Heartbreakingly Hopeful,

I was drawn in immediately by these passionate characters. If Tanner is a raging tide, then Adrianne is the calm below the surface. If you are going to pick up the book and read it, don't expect to get anything else done that day. You'll ignore the phone, the knocks at the door, and quite possibly the pleas of loved ones, just to finish this story. I have read all of Rad's writing and this is definitley one of my favorites. Rad captures intensity and compassion so beautifully, you forget you are reading a book and not experiencing these feeling first hand.Well done.....would a sequel be too much to ask ;-)

I love Radclyffe's books, so I looked forward to this one with a lot of hope. Sadly, it didn't deliver. From any other author, I would say the book is amazing. But knowing what Radclyffe can do, this book left a little to be desired.
So much more could have been done with Arienne's career. (Although I understand if the author didn't want to make a political statement.) Also, Mrs. Whitley's romance seemed a little forced, almost like Radclyffe wrote it as an afterthought and didn't know what to do with it. Overall, this book is worth reading and owning. Just be prepared.

Healing Passion!,

This review is from: Tomorrow's Promise (Paperback)
Tomorrow's Promise is a classic love story. This book is the journey of two different women from totally different worlds that share one thing in common...they are broken! They find their souls and bodies healing from their growing passion for eachother but, will it be enough? Time will heal old wounds but, how much time do they have together? This book was romantic from start to finish and I couldn't be happier! It was an easy read and a complete pleasure as always a Rad book is! I will definitely keep this classic in my collection! You will not be disappointed...

Passions of all sorts run high.,

This review is from: Tomorrow's Promise (Paperback)
In Radclyffe's Tomorrow's Promise, we are treated to the disintegration and re-birth and full, ironic circle of the lives of Adrienne Pierce and Tanner Whitley. The attraction between them is electric. During her stay and slow convalescence, on Whitley Point, Adrienne becomes deeply concerned with, what seems to be the arrested emotional development, personal moral irresponsibility, and unflagging arrogance from which Tanner appears to suffer. Tanner may be a beautiful young woman, but she is a tortured soul. She views her acquaintances as remote beings of little personal interest to her. Their struggle to reconcile their needs with reality is the core of this fascinating and unusual novel. The hard-driving emotions keep the pace sprinting. Radclyffe ably demonstrates her writing skills with a fascinating story, and the romance aspect is never a side plot. Rad has created strong-willed characters who discover they are empowered by love, not shackled by it. A memorable story. |
