Biography

Following the disbandment of the short-lived synth pop group Yazoo, former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke formed Erasure in 1985 with singer Andy Bell. Like Yaz and Depeche Mode, Erasure were a synth-based group, but they had stronger dance inclinations, as well as a sharper, more accessible sense of pop songcraft, than either of Clarke's previous bands. Furthermore, Erasure had the flamboyantly… Read more in Amazon's Erasure Store

Editorial Reviews

Synthpop pioneers Erasure are back with Tomorrow's World, the band's first album in more than four years. The new album is produced by one of the UK dance scene's most exciting new talents, Frankmusik, whose remixing credits include Lady Gaga, Pet Shop Boys, Ellie Goulding, and Far East Movement. Tomorrow's World was written in New York, London, and at Vince Clarke's cabin studio in Maine following a short break, which found Andy Bell recording and releasing his second solo album Non Stop, and Vince Clarke reuniting with former Yazoo partner Alison Moyet for a recent tour. It was recorded in Maine, London and Los Angeles between January and June 2011, with Vince using his vintage collection of analog synths for the final touch. The end result is a collection of electronic songs that sound totally contemporary and classic at the same time. All songs are written by Bell and Clarke. From Lady Gaga to La Roux, the futurist, electronic sound Erasure championed is more relevant today than ever, and once again re-charging the global music scene. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

new-found enegy! October 11, 2011
Format:Audio CD
let's cut to the chase - i haven't enjoyed an erasure album on first listen this much since 'i say i say i say.' it's a great album, not just a great erasure album. let's discuss!

'when i start to (break it all down)' is a curious choice as the first single as it's not really indicative of the rest of the album. it's a fine song, but lacks the propulsive energy found in the rest of the album. and that energy is exactly what makes 'tomorrow's world' really shine. it's infused with new-found vitality, rejuvenation, and sounds oddly relevant. bringing frankmusik in to produce was a nice stroke. he's coaxed out vince's yazoo days, musically speaking, of course, in embracing minor chords more than on past albums. (and andy's vocals, as always, are pristine - though there isn't too much here at the lower end of his register). tracks like 'i lose myself,' (it's easy to imagine alison moyet singing this one) 'be with us,' 'a whole lotta love run riot' and 'then i go twisting' are all dance floor stompers and primed for endless remixes (this is a good thing!). and aside from misguided auto-tune vocals on 'a whole lotta love run riot,' there's not really a misstep on the entire album. it feels as complete and whole as any erasure ever has. on a personal note, my favorite track is 'what will i say when you are gone.' beautiful.

it won't convert the naysayers, but for those of us who've been with vince andy the last twenty years, it's a terrific album. there's nothing immediately memorable and classic as, say, 'oh l'amour,' 'chains of love,' 'a little respect,' or 'always,' but as a whole it trumps, at least in my opinion, the last four or five albums and is right up there with 'the innocents,' 'i say' and 'the circus.'

hats off to you, gentlemen. many have copied, but the original keeps the crown.

Always. October 16, 2011
Format:Audio CD
For those of us who have stuck with them through the years, Erasure has been a source of great musical pleasure and comfort. The synthetic sounds of Vince Clarke and the stratospheric vocals of Andy Bell have given us an entire musical world that is so wonderful to inhabit and enjoy, that some of us have stayed long after the chart hits ended, eager to see where this duo will take us next on their continuing musical journey.

This time, it's a slight detour (or a new phase?) into contemporary dance music, largely created by hotshot producer Frankmusik. He has taken the familiar synthetic bleeps of Clarke and added a new shimmer, making the record sound like much of today's other dance-pop music (including Andy's solo albums). Additionally, Andy's vocals are often processed with AutoTune, although no doubt more for effect than necessity. Vince's synths do chime in, but this time they are encased in Frankmusik's glistening wall of production.

This is no doubt a calculated move to keep Erasure sounding contemporary, and while it basically works as an entertaining album, one does miss the more traditional Erasure sound. The songs are strong overall, with the trailer single "When I Start to (Break it All Down") being the outstanding track.

It is good to see Erasure trying to stay fresh and current, rather than coast on their past, although one hopes they will not completely move away from their classic sound. In any case, new music from these pioneers of synthpop is always welcome.

With the exception of 2005's Nightbird, it has largely been a lost decade for erasure fans. Unfortunately, this record does not mark a return to form, nor is it likely to win the duo many new converts. Instead, this record falls short in nearly every way. Songs pulse in and out without really taking off and end abruptly, as though the machines were simply switched off. It's hard not to blame the producer, Frankmusik, for obscuring Vince Clarke's usually shimmery synths and minimal production under the weight of every disco trick in his book. I disagree with the reviewers who say that Bell's vocals are exceptional here. The compression and processing strips him of his usual drama and pathos. Not that the quality of songs here deserve anything more. I'll continue to enjoy the duo's back catalog, but this record marks the moment I step off the erasure bus.

Meh.
I'm an Erasure fan from the start. I listened to both CDs once after I got them more than a month ago. I was so unimpressed I have not even played them again. Didn't even rip it.

Long time Erasure fan here, and that's why I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 4 or 5. That said, this isn't a "bad" album by any means; the production is polished, Andy Bell sounds... Read more

God only knows how long Erasure will continue to make music but my god I can't get enough. Tomorrow's World is a solid addition to their Discography.
