Great Album for Fans of "Tom's Diner",
By
This review is from: Tom's Album (Audio CD)
I don't know that this is the greatest album unless you're a fan of the song "Tom's Diner," but since that's who I figure it's geared toward, it's definitely worth having. You'll find just about everything you want here--and it will leave you wanting more! The album contains both the acapella as well as the DNA versions of "Tom's Diner" and a host of great remakes and parodies. Two of my favorites are "Tom's ?" by Bingo Hand Job (a hilarious acapella parody) and "Jeannie's Diner" by Marilyn E Whitelaw & Mark Davis (a parody based on *I Dream of Jeannie* that was also used on a Nick at Night advertisement for the show). For those who are more serious-minded, there's a Gulf War satire by Beth Watson and a social commentary by Nikki D. There are a couple of cool versions in foreign languages, a reggae version by Michigan & Smiley, a rather silly rap version by After One, and a version with some really cool instrumentals (albeit rather lacking vocals) by n.d.a. Project. I'm not crazy about all the songs on the album (the After One rap version, in particular), but there's enough on here to keep me interested and laughing for a while. If you love "Tom's Diner," though--it's a must have.

Different versions of one song,
This review is from: Tom's Album (Audio CD)
Almost 15 years after it's release "Tom's Album" is still available for sale and still one of the most groundbreaking CD's of it's kind. The CD contains different versions of the song "Tom's Diner." In brief, it's the same track with different lyrics and slight alterations to the track. Suzanne Vega is featured on the acoustic version and the version that radio picked up with the group DNA. Another popular version of the song Daddy's Little Girl by rapper Nikki D who raps about a girl who is a little too fast and finds herself pregnant. This was an original concept. I originally bought this album soley for the Suzanne Vega version but found several of the other versions pleasing.

Inside Tom's Diner,

This review is from: Tom's Album (Audio CD)
Suzanne Vega has put together an eclectic compilation of various themes of her song "Tom's Diner", including the one that started it all-DNA featuring Suzanne Vega. One of the best cuts off the album is "Daddy's Little Girl" by Nikki D., who turned the song about a diner into one about a teenage girl facing an unwanted pregnancy. Another is "Waiting at the Border" about a female soldier in combat during Operation Desert Storm. Jeannie's Diner is a song about, what else, I Dream of Jeannie. If you watch Nick At Nite, you probably have heard the song in the ads for show. Some of the other songs on the album include versions done in German, Reggae, Rap and one-Tom's ? by Bingo Hand Job-that is just plain weird. I highly recommend this album, but suggest you follow Suzanne's advice, which is "not to play these songs from begining to end, but to skip around and find the ones you like. It's all in fun."
