Tom's sold out to P&G, the colgate toothpaste owners, and have now added unnecessary chemicals to the product. I was so angry when I read the ingredients. Now I need to find a new toothpaste.

If you want a carcinogen in your toothpaste, this one is for you. After the brand was bought by a large corporation, they added sodium lauryl sulfate.

First, I know this is Tom's Fluoride free toothpaste. That is why I bought it like I have been buying it. I don't want fluoride or any other harmful chemicals in the toothpaste I use. But guess what? Toms has sold out to the big manufacturers and corporations.

This is fluoride free toothpaste, but it contains other chemicals now that they don't tell you about, and didn't have before. I have never felt the need to post a review on amazon but this info needs to be spread. Shame on you Tom's of Maine!

1. Sorbitol - a naturally occurring substance in the body that is derived from fructose, and it is deadly to the cells within the body, according to Harvard grad Dr. Gabe Mirkin

2. Hydrated silica - is primarily used as an abrasive in toothpaste, is made from a crystallized compound found in quartz, sand, and flint. Tooth enamel re-mineralizes daily from the supply of ionic calcium and phosphorus in the saliva. Scratching the surface of the tooth with an abrasive such as hydrated silica harms the enamel and prevents re-mineralization, much like using sand to clean glass. Severe wear could eventually occur.

3. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - Perhaps the most dangerous ingredient in personal-care products is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). Because SLS has a foaming property, it is added to toothpastes in order to generate foam and give the impression that the toothpaste is working. However, SLS has been found to be quite corrosive and harmful to skin tissue says a report by the American College of Toxicity.

In the cleaning industry, SLS is used in products such as garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and car wash soaps. Elsewhere, SLS is used for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant.

I bought this because I wanted a fluoride-free toothpaste. It smells pretty good, the taste is not particularly good, and the aftertaste is horrible. And, the aftertaste lingers a long time. I had to eat something to take away the taste - kind of defeats the purpose of brushing. I definitely would NOT recommend this toothpaste. The fluoride-free aspect is its only good quality.
Update: I used this toothpaste anyway, despite the taste. I guess I developed a tolerance for it. Anyway, after a glowing report from my dental hygienist, I must upgrade my rating a bit. She said there was hardly any cleaning needed, so I'm guessing that it actually is anti-plaque. You can't argue with success - it was my best report in years, and I don't know what else to attribute it to. However, I still don't like the taste, and no toothpaste will work if it isn't used.

I couldn't believe it when I read the ingredients on this toothpaste... it has SODIUM LAUREL SULFATE, which is a toxic ingredient. Shame on "Tom's of Maine" for selling out and adding horrible ingredients like SLS! Will never buy their products again!

I'm very much into the whole natural products thing and aspire to use products that reflect the same... but this toothpaste fails to live up to the quality I associate with the Tom's of Maine brand...
I generally associate peppermint with a refreshing & minty taste; this toothpaste has neither.
It definitely does NOT whiten. I've been using it 2x a day for about 2 months and I see no difference in the whiteness of my smile.
Antiplaque, eh... no more than the cheapest tube of generic toothpaste.
Definitely not worth what I paid for it. I plan to keep searching for a natural toothpaste that actually does what it claims to do.

My experience and why I like it:
I have been using Tom's of Maine flouride free toothpaste for almost two years now and am glad I made the switch. I originally switched mainly due to fear after hearing the dangers of flouride. However, this is controversial and I will not go too much in depth. However, what I did realize was that I am probably swallowing a decent amount of flouride by not completely rinsing my mouth out every time I brush (usually I just swish/spit once). By using this toothpaste you will not have to worry about swallowing the toothpaste as there is no warning label on it, though i don't recommend swallowing it. Though flouride free, it offers much protection against cavities as I am a twice a day brusher and have actually seen a decrease in cavities after switching. If combined with flossing (as I only recently have started doing), you will almost certainly not get any cavities. You do have to get used to the more bland taste of this (no artificial sweeteners), but it is not repulsive at all. Since making the switch, I had have experienced a dramatic decrease in canker sores likely caused by harsh ingredients in typical Colgate and Crest toothpaste. Soon more people will make the switch to more natural toothpastes like this. If you want the benefits of natural toothpastes, try Tom's of Maine or even Burt's Bees (which my dentist recommended). It is about as all natural as a toothpaste can get while still being effective.

Overall: The only thing lacking about this toothpaste is the flavor and I noticed it has less ingredients than some of Tom's other toothpastes. I personally prefer Tom's Peppermint Flouride Free over this.
