Excellent for canker sore sufferers - just as good as the Rembrandt one,
By ML Smith (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tom's of Maine Natural Clean and Gentle Care, SLS-Free Antiplaque plus Whitening Spearmint Toothpaste, 5.2 -Ounce Tubes (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Like many others, I was reborn after finding that SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) in the toothpaste may cause canker sores.
For years doctors and dentists told me to reduce my stress levels and eat better - but I was not stressed and ate really well. It's just amazing to me how many dentists don't know the basic facts: Since 1994 there are multiple medical researches indicating that SLS in toothpastes causes and increases frequency and duration of canker sores! I first tried the Rembrandt brand (called "Extra Gentle") and used it for about 3 years, and it worked! The only thing I didn't like about it is the high price. So I decided to try Tom's of Maine brand - and I'm very happy with it. Pros: - No canker sores at all - I've been using it for 5 months now - Good taste - Much bigger and cheaper - you get more for your money - 6 x 5.2 oz compared with only 3 x 3oz from Rembrandt Cons: - Metal tube - a bit harder to squeeze towards the end (The Rembrandt tubes are made out of plastic) - but nothing really to complain about - 5.2 oz tubes - which means you can't take it with you on an airplane (3 oz limit). I keep a tube of Rembrandt just for that purpose Overall great toothpaste - highly recommended.

After I read that the ingredient SLS in toothpaste can cause mouth burning and irritation I decided to find a toothpaste that did not contain SLS. After searching I found Tom's. After using this product now for one month I can honestly say that my mouth is more comfortable and has less burning. I will continue using this product.

The only toothpaste for me!,

With three autoimmune diseases and several allergies, I've been on a mission in the last few years to reduce the number of chemicals and artificial nonsense in everything from my food to my makeup to my laundry detergent. Eliminating all SLS has done wonders for my health, and helped to keep my autoimmune flares to a much less severe level. I'm also allergic to fluoride (and it has a negative impact on my thyroid disease, even if I wasn't), so finding a toothpaste without SLS (or similar replacement gunk) *or* fluoride was difficult. Tom's is the best I've tried, and I can't imagine switching to any other product.
The taste as a bit odd at first, especially switching from mainstream brands like Crest, but I got used to it after about a week and now chemical-laden, overly sweetened toothpastes taste very strange to me. Yes, it suds less than big-name brands -- but that was actually a good sign in my eyes, the hallmark of a truly SLS-free product, and again I got used to it rather quickly. The metal tube seemed very odd to me at first, but after more than a year of using it now, I must say I like it much better than flimsy plastic tubes. I can roll it up from the bottom as the tube empties, and the roll will stay put, no toothpaste squishing back down to the bottom of the tube. The last 5% is difficult to get out, but you can actually press on the collar of the tube to get nearly all of it out quite well. And given the sort of company Tom's is, I figure they chose the metal tube for a reason! My only complaint is that I haven't yet been able to find a travel size (ie, TSA carry-on compliant, 3oz or less) version of Tom's SLS-free and fluoride-free toothpaste. I'm hoping Amazon has it somewhere around here, or that I can order it directly from Tom's. Using a drugstore toothpaste is not an option for me -- even one use of fluoride and I'll break out in a rash -- so it's even more important for me than for the average mainstream consumer that I be able to take my toothpaste in my carry-on bag! Tom's, I hope you're listening! I would buy a 3oz size in a heartbeat, or even a 6-pack of 3oz tubes.
