I purchased this because I have been using non flouride Tom's of Maine toothpaste for some time. I love it. I purchased this thinking it would be the same just without the SLS. Wrong! This says naturally foaming, it does not foam at all. SLS is a detergent and is what makes the foam. If you are someone who feels like they need a little foaming action to get their teeth...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for canker sore sufferers - just as good as the Rembrandt one, October 3, 2009
This review is from: Tom's of Maine Natural Clean and Gentle Care, SLS-Free Antiplaque plus Whitening Spearmint Toothpaste, 5.2 -Ounce Tubes (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Like many others, I was reborn after finding that SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) in the toothpaste may cause canker sores.
For years doctors and dentists told me to reduce my stress levels and eat better - but I was not stressed and ate really well. It's just amazing to me how many dentists don't know the basic facts: Since 1994 there are multiple medical researches indicating that SLS in toothpastes causes and increases frequency and duration of canker sores!

I first tried the Rembrandt brand (called "Extra Gentle") and used it for about 3 years, and it worked! The only thing I didn't like about it is the high price. So I decided to try Tom's of Maine brand - and I'm very happy with it.

Pros:
- No canker sores at all - I've been using it for 5 months now
- Good taste
- Much bigger and cheaper - you get more for your money - 6 x 5.2 oz compared with only 3 x 3oz from Rembrandt

Cons:
- Metal tube - a bit harder to squeeze towards the end (The Rembrandt tubes are made out of plastic) - but nothing really to complain about
- 5.2 oz tubes - which means you can't take it with you on an airplane (3 oz limit). I keep a tube of Rembrandt just for that purpose

Overall great toothpaste - highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars No SLS in Tom's Toothpaste, May 13, 2009

After I read that the ingredient SLS in toothpaste can cause mouth burning and irritation I decided to find a toothpaste that did not contain SLS. After searching I found Tom's. After using this product now for one month I can honestly say that my mouth is more comfortable and has less burning. I will continue using this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only toothpaste for me!, January 3, 2011
This review is from: Tom's of Maine Natural Clean and Gentle Care, SLS-Free Antiplaque plus Whitening Spearmint Toothpaste, 5.2 -Ounce Tubes (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
With three autoimmune diseases and several allergies, I've been on a mission in the last few years to reduce the number of chemicals and artificial nonsense in everything from my food to my makeup to my laundry detergent. Eliminating all SLS has done wonders for my health, and helped to keep my autoimmune flares to a much less severe level. I'm also allergic to fluoride (and it has a negative impact on my thyroid disease, even if I wasn't), so finding a toothpaste without SLS (or similar replacement gunk) *or* fluoride was difficult. Tom's is the best I've tried, and I can't imagine switching to any other product.

The taste as a bit odd at first, especially switching from mainstream brands like Crest, but I got used to it after about a week and now chemical-laden, overly sweetened toothpastes taste very strange to me. Yes, it suds less than big-name brands -- but that was actually a good sign in my eyes, the hallmark of a truly SLS-free product, and again I got used to it rather quickly. The metal tube seemed very odd to me at first, but after more than a year of using it now, I must say I like it much better than flimsy plastic tubes. I can roll it up from the bottom as the tube empties, and the roll will stay put, no toothpaste squishing back down to the bottom of the tube. The last 5% is difficult to get out, but you can actually press on the collar of the tube to get nearly all of it out quite well. And given the sort of company Tom's is, I figure they chose the metal tube for a reason!

My only complaint is that I haven't yet been able to find a travel size (ie, TSA carry-on compliant, 3oz or less) version of Tom's SLS-free and fluoride-free toothpaste. I'm hoping Amazon has it somewhere around here, or that I can order it directly from Tom's. Using a drugstore toothpaste is not an option for me -- even one use of fluoride and I'll break out in a rash -- so it's even more important for me than for the average mainstream consumer that I be able to take my toothpaste in my carry-on bag! Tom's, I hope you're listening! I would buy a 3oz size in a heartbeat, or even a 6-pack of 3oz tubes.

This fluoride free toothpaste is natural and tastes minty, but is not too strong like so many other brands on the market. Fluoride-free toothpaste is harder to find than traditional kinds of paste and is better for your teeth-fluroide just strips the enamel away.
This is lightly sweet and minty and I am able to brush my teeth longer than with other pastes I have previously used.
I recommend this for anyone who likes spearmint flavored toothpaste and appreciates natural ingredients.

Tom's also makes children's toothpaste.

i have been suffering from horrific canker sores for years. i tried a LOT of different products. changed my diet. exercised more. exercised less. cut out sugars. you name it and i tried it. nothing really worked.

two things i do now are using this toothpaste and a Tom's of Maine mouthwash and i take vitamin D regularly as my vitamin D levels were extremely low. if you don't know you levels, get checked next time you visit your doctor, it's a simply test from blood. MANY people suffer from vitamin D deficiency.

i don't know for sure if it's the D or the toothpaste, but it's definitely one or possible a combination of the two that finally got rid of my canker sores. they were excruciating, especially the ones on the side of my tongue. made it very painful to talk or eat.

Gentle on your mouth, great for kids. I use it and my twin toddlers do, too. The spearmint is not intense like most toothpastes and I don't want my kids using fruity sweet toothpaste. No fluoride means it is safe for them to learn how to brush their teeth. My mouth is sensitive to SLS and fluoride, so this is a win-win. However, you can get it at [...] for a lot cheaper.

Tom's of Maine Toothpaste

Tom's is a small company, employing fewer than two hundred people. It was founded in 1970 and then purchased by Colgate in 2006. Fortunately, Colgate has left Tom's alone to manage their business according to their original principles.

Tom's makes natural products. The toothpaste contains no sugar, sweeteners, or artificial flavoring. By contrast, I looked at a tube of Colgate toothpaste that I have on the shelf. It contains "flavor," whatever that is, "saccharine," and "propylene glycol." The last ingredient is a less-toxic form of anti-freeze. One advantage of Tom's toothpaste is that we do not have to worry about ingesting poisons when we use it.

I have been using Tom's for years. The toothpaste comes in many flavors. On Amazon, you can find Peppermint, Spearmint, Fennel, Orange-Mango, Cinnamint, Wintermint, Apricot, Soothing Mint, True Mint, and Gingermint, among others. I prefer the Peppermint flavor, which is refreshing, but not overwhelming. The toothpaste is available in sizes from 1 ounce to 6 ounces.

I do not exactly live in a wilderness area, but my local stores no longer carry Tom's. Fortunately, it can be found on Amazon and other web sites. The prices do vary from vendor to vendor, so check for the best price.
