The "long-lasting" versions Tom's has come out with all contain zinc ricinoleate, and for a lot of people it causes itching, burning and skin peeling on the underarms. We gave it up for another brand after 10 years loyalty, and buy the old form whenever we can find it. Bravo for getting aluminum out of my system, but BOOO for making an unusable product, Tom's.

My skin doesn't deal well with most deodorants. Chalky antiperspirants irritate my skin the moment they're applied, and even Speedstick-style deodorant causes a rash after a few weeks of use. This deodorant, however, can be used non-stop with no irritation at all.

I see several reviews from people saying that it didn't control odor for them, and I don't think those people are lying. However, just as different electric razors work better or worse with different guys' beards, I imagine that different deodorants work better or worse with different guys' skin chemistry. As for myself, I've never had an issue with Tom's controlling odor all day long.

My only gripe here is the price. Usually you buy in bulk to get a better deal, but this 6-pack still comes out to over five dollars per stick. However, I can find this deodorant at my local Target for just over three dollars per stick. Maybe this could be your best option if you live in a rural area and can't find it anywhere else, but the price seems a bit high to me.

As with many people (I am relieved to discover it's not just me), my armpits are burning, peeling, and discolored as a result of using this product. I can no longer find the original versions of Tom's deodorants at my local supermarkets or at Target. I hope the Tom's people see all of these reviews and bring back the original (in addition to the "long-lasting" version).

Applied this stuff and it felt like someone opened a portal to the pits of hell. After prolonged used my armpits are peeling and BROWN from discoloration. Horrible stuff.

My husband and I both use this brand of deoderant on a daily basis because we're moderately concerned about aluminum in antipersperants on a regular basis. We like the unscented, and feel it does as good a job of preventing odor as can be expected from a natural product. (At least it does for me, but then I don't sweat that much.) On a BIG DAY, though (performance, interview, party, etc.), antiperspirant is still the only reliable anti-odor choice. If you care at all about aluminum, by using this on average days and antipersperant for special days you can cut down on aluminum without inconvenience. I'm taking the time to write this review because I think the reviewers that are hard on the product are helpful, but a little unrealistic. Nothing prevents wetness like aluminum. This product is for people who are willing to trade off a bit of wetness for a bit less metal in their system.

I used the "long lasting" (12 hour) lemon grass scented Tom's of Maine deodorant for a few days and developed a red sunburn type of rash on my arm pits--it also burned like a sunburn. The skin in the affected area has also started peeling, like a sunburn would. After a google search, I discovered that many others have had this problem with the long lasting Tom's of Maine containing "zinc ricinoleate." It seems the Apricot and Natural long lasting deodorants also contain this ingredient. While everyone's body reacts to different substances differently, one should be careful with this deodorant. Many people seem to have a sensitivity to this product, and I'm not one who generally has problems with sensitive skin.

I used this for a few days, almost a full week last summer. I didn't realize how important deodorant was until I used this completely ineffective "all natural" crap. Pretty pathetic to prevent underarm odor.
Also, it caused me one of the most confusing and uncomfortable allergic reactions of all time! I couldn't wear a tank top during July because of the searing pain under my arms, and the unsightly rash this caused. I had to go deodorant free for almost a month while my poor skin healed itself. And note: I do not have sensitive skin and have never allergically reaction to any product before.
I didn't even buy it on Amazon, I got it at a drug store. I'm just writing a review on here to forewarn people! DO NOT BUY.

So I bought the Toms of Maine long lasting lilac deodorant and over a few days the gates to pain and peeling opened up in my pits. It smelled really lovely and I had high hopes for it since it claimed to be natural and free of crap. Well it includes propylene glycol aka anti-freeze. The other ingredient, zinc ricinoleate, is found in everything from brake fluid to plastic to, you guessed it, deodorant. Neither of these is natural is it? Well I was in the shower with my husband (NSFW!) and he was like "WHAT IS GOING ON WITH YOUR ARMPIT!?", well sure enough my armpit was peeling. I'm not talking a little bit, I'm talking a sheet of skin. Well I was very perturbed but I thought there is no way my natural, fabulous deodorant is doing this! It must be that pesky laundry mat with its unnatural detergent being used in all those washers. Anyway I used it for 2 more days and the peeling got worse so I stopped. Lo and behold my peeling subsided and my annoyance at Tom's set in. I sent an email to Tom's, got a lovely response and they asked for my old deodorant back for testing now that I think about it, it'll probably be on animals since Colgate now owns Tom's. That is absolutely disgusting to me :(). Anyways Tom's sold out and they seem to be losing customers rapidly. I'd rather smell like a natural human then use their "products".
