Great Toothpaste,

This review is from: Tom's of Maine Natural Care Toothpaste, Antiplaque, Spearmint, 6 oz (170 g) (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Tom's of Maine ToothpasteTom's is a small company, employing fewer than two hundred people. It was founded in 1970 and then purchased by Colgate in 2006. Fortunately, Colgate has left Tom's alone to manage their business according to their original principles. Tom's makes natural products. The toothpaste contains no sugar, sweeteners, or artificial flavoring. By contrast, I looked at a tube of Colgate toothpaste that I have on the shelf. It contains "flavor," whatever that is, "saccharine," and "propylene glycol." The last ingredient is a less-toxic form of anti-freeze. One advantage of Tom's toothpaste is that we do not have to worry about ingesting poisons when we use it. I have been using Tom's for years. The toothpaste comes in many flavors. On Amazon, you can find Peppermint, Spearmint, Fennel, Orange-Mango, Cinnamint, Wintermint, Apricot, Soothing Mint, True Mint, and Gingermint, among others. I prefer the Peppermint flavor, which is refreshing, but not overwhelming. The toothpaste is available in sizes from 1 ounce to 6 ounces. I do not exactly live in a wilderness area, but my local stores no longer carry Tom's. Fortunately, it can be found on Amazon and other web sites. The prices do vary from vendor to vendor, so check for the best price.

I've used this particular flavor and feature set for several years now and think it's the best toothpaste I've ever used. I grew up using CREST fluoride toothpaste and eventually found as an adult that the big name brands taste harsh and are overly abrasive and foamy. Tom's is pleasant and refreshing, not harsh. This toothpaste will not foam as much, so you may feel like it's not cleaning as well. However it does a great job with a normal brush and especially with today's ultrasonic toothbrushes. The only downside is that the tube is made of a tougher material so it's helpful to flatten it from the bottom to the top with your toothbrush handle and roll it up into place with a binder clip to make it easier to get all of the paste from the tube. Probably will only have to do this twice, and it's not that big of an issue. Finding it in local stores in exactly the combination of flavors and features you like is not the easiest, so keep the box to know what you are looking for, search by keywords or UPC code, and order in bulk from Amazon or another vendor when you find a good deal. This will be my second bulk order in two years, so I'm averaging a tube about 2 to 3 months brushing twice daily. Happy smiles!

We have used Tom's for a number of years now. My husband prefers the spearmint, I have to say I like the fennel version even better ;). You just want to keep brushing with that delicious paste! Tom's toothpaste is so much healthier than the brands commonly available in supermarkets and pharmacies. Sure it's more expensive than the generic pepperminty paste on your corner store's shelves but well worth it. We're talking about stuff that we put in our mouths and, when swallowing something accidentally, our bodies here. You wouldn't want your kids to swallow the chemically flavored pastes right, so neither should you! But without getting preachy on you - a little Tom's goes a long way. Gets both your teeth and your breath clean.
