Tom's of Maine Toothpaste

Tom's is a small company, employing fewer than two hundred people. It was founded in 1970 and then purchased by Colgate in 2006. Fortunately, Colgate has left Tom's alone to manage their business according to their original principles.

Tom's makes natural products. The toothpaste contains no sugar, sweeteners, or artificial flavoring. By contrast, I looked at a tube of Colgate toothpaste that I have on the shelf. It contains "flavor," whatever that is, "saccharine," and "propylene glycol." The last ingredient is a less-toxic form of anti-freeze. One advantage of Tom's toothpaste is that we do not have to worry about ingesting poisons when we use it.

I have been using Tom's for years. The toothpaste comes in many flavors. On Amazon, you can find Peppermint, Spearmint, Fennel, Orange-Mango, Cinnamint, Wintermint, Apricot,

Tom's of Maine has been developing toothpastes for many years, and has generally been doing quite well, as the brands tote their "natural" ingredients, over major manufacturers such as Colgate and Crest. I purchased this tube because I trust the brand and I like a strong spearmint flavor. Well, the spearmint flavor is certainly a strong selling point, as it leaves one's mouth feeling fresh and clean after use. I also like the fluoride content, as fluoride helps prevent cavities. The only drawback is the presence of Sodium Laurel Sulfate, an additive that makes the toothpaste foam. For some people (a very small minority of people), SLS can cause mouth irritation, redness, and sorness. Otherwise, this is a good solid toothpaste; I was still hoping for no SLS, thus the one-star deduction.

My husband and I started using Tom's toothpaste years ago, and we cannot go back. Regular toothpaste now tastes so sweet by comparison. We like the natural oils and flavor. This new formulation has a stronger flavor, but I love the longer-lasting freshness. Great product.

I trusted Toms brand, so we purchased this toothpaste instead of the Spry or JASON brand. 3 days after I started using this toothpaste, my mouth broke out with 7 ulcers and spots on my tongue. I looked at the ingredients of the toothpaste and it contains SLS or sodium lauryl sulfate which is widely known to cause these problems. This discovery was suprosing due to the Toms brand being advertised as natural and organic. After a bit of research I discovered that this brand is owned by Colgate-Palmolive......

No more Toms anything. I'll stick to the brands that have earned my trust and avoid this sham from now on.

BTW, these mouth ulcers have completely ruined my weekend and are still, at this moment, causing significant pain to the point of causing me to tear up. Why the hell would any company keep using SLS?

For anyone disenchanted by the first review:

Actually, xylitol is as natural as it gets! It is an organic compound, naturally occurring "in the fibers of many fruits and vegetables, and can be extracted from various berries, oats, and mushrooms, as well as fibrous material such as corn husks and sugar cane bagasse, and birch" (Xylitol, 2011). If you have any health concerns regarding Xylitol, please refer to the "FAQ's" page of Xylitol.org.

Tom's of Maine brand toothpaste is one of the best family toothpastes around. I used to use Colgate, and while the taste of Tom's toothpaste was startlingly bitter compared to other big-name toothpastes like Crest or Colgate at first, the taste has grown on me. Concerning the size of the tube in relation to the price: I've found that a Tube of Tom's from Target is well-worth $4.50. I discovered that it takes just a pea-sized amount on my toothbrush to leave my mouth satisfyingly fresh. I'm used to squeezing a whole inch of toothpaste on my toothbrush, but Tom's seems to go much further.

Overall, I'm glad I made the switch!

I generally get nauseous from the flavor of toothpaste, so I've tried a lot of different brands. Tom's is the only one that doesn't leave me feeling any nausea as a result of brushing my teeth. I highly recommend this for anybody with similar problems.

It takes a few days to become accustom to this toothpaste since it is not as sweet as the sugary toothpaste I was raised with. After a few days I can not longer stand the regular stuff. The idea of brushing teeth with sugar now strikes me as ludicrous. Cheaper on Amazon than even in Walmart.
