Overlooked classic of modern jazz, February 22, 2009
This review is from: Tones Shapes & Colors (Audio CD)
This CD by Joe Lovano, tenor sax, Ken Werner, piano, Mel Lewis drums and Dennis Irwin Bass, was recorded for Black Saint label issuance in 1986 before what sounds like a small audience, judging by the claps at the very end.
It is really propulsive from the off, it swings, but is never grating, and all the 7 tracks get better with every listen. The drummer has that sewing machine efficiency reminiscent of Billy Higgins but drives the music forward with the beefier drums simultaneously, the pianist Ive noted before for adding tunefulness - he contributes 4 of the 7 tracks, and the bass grounds the music unobtrusively, Joe is on great form throughout starting straight away in track 1. I have quite a few JL CD's and have seen him live at Pizza express here in London, but have never been as consistently impressed from start to finish as by this quartet's Tones Shapes and Colors.
