Book Description

Ttup Invited Poetry Series January 15, 1994
This probing book of poetry is structured around one man's quest for healing and salvation. From his high school years in Texas during the early 1960s through his college teaching career 30 years later, the male persona of these poems searches for his lost father, for forgiveness and faith, for love and family. Throughout the collection, seven poems trace events from Saint Paul's quest for healing, proving a complement to the struggles of the contemporary man. The miracle that is life is chronicled here in terse and moving poems. The Vietnam Vet Looks for His Sons at Summer Basketball Camp Basketballs drum the floor. A hundred hearts race up and down the court. Intent as salmon leaping up the falls, these middle schoolers drive for backboards, spin lay ups through the hoops. Young men on the evening news slam chunks of metal down a pipe they aim toward towns where other boys draw circles in the dirt, spill out their bags of marbles. "Vivid and touching . . . from Vietnam to North Hollywood, from Abilene to Damascus [Fink] lay[s] permanent claim to a wide territory."—X. J. Kennedy

Editorial Reviews

Review

Poet fink presents a fine collection of free verse writings which contain spirited, involving images ("Those upon the ground believed/a star had fallen, a dollop of run-/molten tsunami crashing upon their huts. ") Fink's poems are tense and involving: fine works. Lost Arrow and Other True Stories Scott C. Davis Cune 911 N. 67th Street Seattle, WA 98103-5315 1-885942-50-8 $19. -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars An Appreciated Gift, April 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Tongues of Men and of Angels (Ttup Invited Poetry Series) (Hardcover)
Because this book meant a lot to me, I gave it as a gift to a friend. This is what he wrote in response: "I am no literary critic, but never-the-less I found it an amazing body of work. I love the earthiness, the sentiment, the wonderful verbal pictures. I also felt a kinship with what he felt about war. I know that World War II and Vietnam are a war or so apart, but war is war, and no matter the era or place it has the same destructive effect on a man's personality. Thank you again for such a beautiful gift -- this book goes on the stack of books of poetry which I keep at hand to give me solace, courage, and insight into the world in which I live."

Why Is It at the half-price book table in the Mall, we always find picture histories of war nobody buys but can't put down-like when I was a kid in the corner drug reading comic books flopped on the bottom shelf of the magazine stand, my father sitting at the counter buying a Cherry Coke for some high school graduate home on leave, first time, who just dropped by the Rexall to parade his uniform? Read the first page
