Editorial Review

Toxic spill cleanup has never been so much fun. In this zany game, you play an extraterrestrial goofball named Ed who mistakenly spills some space goo onto the Earth, changing its vegetable inhabitants into fierce monsters and generally turning our blue planet into a trippy, psychedelic play land.

From the same kooky minds that brought you the incomparable Nintendo 64 rendition of Rayman 2, Tonic Trouble swirls together the run-and-jump action of a platform game with exploratory and puzzle-solving elements. Responsive controls, physical gags, and varied gameplay solidify the positive experience in this expansive, kid-friendly title that's challenging enough for adults.

The game has an interesting system for gaining new attributes--players gather found objects and bring them to a mad doctor, who uses them to build gadgets worthy of James Bond. Skills acquired from the gadgets include flying, pogo-sticking, deep swimming, and shooting bees from a blowpipe. Get into Tonic Trouble and help Ed get out of it. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • Brilliantly colored graphics
  • Hilarious player design
  • A massive game that keeps you guessing
Cons:
  • Camera angles can be problematic
  • Occasional polygon seams show

4.0 out of 5 stars Tonic Trouble is a lot of fun, January 21, 2000

The toxic goo Ed spilled on earth just so happens to make the vegetables and toasters evil! The beginning of the game is like a giant sled ride, very fun. The environment is great, lots of interesting things to see, secret agents to talk to, very colorful. If you make a mistake, you get many chances. It's easy to get a lot of lives saved up. Ed gets 'pumped up' on popcorn, but it doesn't last long enough. Good game for kids and new users. Sometimes it is hard to see because of bad camera angles.

I remember getting this game back in 1999 for Christmas. I still have it and play it every now and then on my old N64. Nowadays, when I play it, I'm thinking, "WTF?", but back about 7 years ago, I thought it was the sh-t. I'm sad that it's not being made anymore, because it was a great game. Maybe they should make a sequel!
