The mosh pit just reopened for business!,

Spiderbait delivers excellent power chord rock with hint of punk! For those of you who did't like the "Black Betty" cover, what did you want? An exact copy of the original? Go back to your classic rock stations and stay away rating 21st century bands. These guys are for real!

Spiderbait grinds on,

I first saw Spiderbait live in a smoky University hall in Melbourne in early 1995. Around that time they personified the funky, raw Melbourne alternative rock scene. Playing live, they leave you in a trance coloured by beat-infested, heavy riff-perpetuated, mosh-inspired, funked-out bliss. After several albums of experimenting with a wider range of genres, they have returned to their earlier roots.
Whether it's Janet's melodic power-pop, Whit's virtuoso rhythm guitar (as a guitar player myself, I remain convinced to this day that he is THE best rythm guitarist alive) or Kram's metal/acid/beat-driven chanting amongst tight drum fills and an almost religious affection for playing in the off-beat, this is an album that re-captures the raw energy of their live shows. Check it out. Definately worth a listen. Play it loud.

This is my first introduction to Spiderbait, and I am completely sold! This is a great album. Although most people didn't like their cover version of Leadbelly's Black Betty, I loved it. It's as raw and as mean as Lead's own. I recommend this one to anyone who loves a good time!

This Is One Great Rock And Roll Band,

Spiderbait have a rare gift, and I mean really rare. They can hit you with a chord change or a "yeah!" that makes anything else superfluous. Like bands such as the Ramones, Pixies, Nirvana, it isn't always the lyrics that make a song amazing, sometimes it's just the "feel". Sometimes they load up a riff and drive it home in a way that makes you just whoop and crank that volume. Imagine Helmet if they could swing. And had two singers. And a sense of humour. Can't say I'm a big fan of the "Black Betty" cover, but they showed how they felt about it's unexpected popularity in Australia by issuing "F##cken Awesome" as the follow up single! That's sure to get airplay. A couple of slower songs toward he end, but they are great songs and break things up nicely. Pretend they are the-next-big-thing and you heard them first.

After having followed Spiderbait's musical evolution since their doing live gigs around Australia I have to say that this ablum, Tonight Alright, is their best.
They seem to have put a great deal of effort into this album and I believe it shows. Every song pays tribute to a variety of genres and composers/bands but make every song sound Spiderbait. From my perspective it is great to see that they have returned to the music they started out with and that they have created another "heavy" album. Even the songs that are slow are so heavy I don't feel I have to push the skip button to go to the next song. For people into heavy metal/rock, surfy music, punk/hardcore, stoner, even death metal (without growl vocals and death lyrics), this is a great album to have in ones collection. Rock on!

Hot Aussie Rock,

Catchy melodies, addictive riffs, and some sexy vocals make this a modern butt-rock masterpiece. Hard enough to please the guys, hooky enough to make the girls dance. As Stephen King recently said in Entertainment Weekly, "Just great rip-ass, back-draft rock & roll...If Clay Aiken tried to sing like this, he'd catch on fire."

Take advantage of the insane cheap price of this album!,

Just looking at the price difference of this album to their earlier ones, you might get the impression that Spiderbait has hit the wall and released a DUD. This is NOT the case!!
Tonight Alright pumps out geniune Spiderbait power. Spiderbait have a real talent for contrasting the strong powerful voice of Kram (drums), with the much more melodic and even sometimes cute-sie voice of Janet (bass), backed up with the solid guitar work of Whitt. This three piece plays together as a BAND. No dazzling lights, extravagent solos or hitting the high notes. After listening to the CD (or better still, go see 'em live) you're not thinking to yourself "wow, they are the most talented artists ever!", you're thinking "that ROCKED!!" and you feel like picking up your guitar, turning up the dials and letting it all out. As with "Black Betty" getting a bad rap, you're buying a Spiderbait CD ... this one is Spiderbait doing what Spiderbait does. Listen to it as a Spiderbait song and you will love it. Don't really want to pick out any songs as being better than others, but "tonite" is just really cool, "5th set" and "live in a box" make me want to crank up the overdrive and drive the neighbours nuts! Sorry for the toooo long review.

I bought this CD for "Black Betty". After listening to the whole CD, I discovered that was the only song I liked. All the other ones sound like European dance/pop club songs, and I thought they sucked. Oh, and most of the other songs are sung by some chick, not the guy on "Black Betty".

Great New band - different and refreshing,
By
This review is from: Tonight Alright (Audio CD)
If you don't like the Black Betty cover, you don't like good music. It's not about understanding the words; it's about the feeling of the music and rythmn. I bought this cd here on Amazon, used for like $2.50. I enjoyed most of the songs on the album. There is also a female singer who sings on several songs. The best part of the album is the music, it has good pace, guitar riffs, drums, and overall feeling. Similar bands in my opinion are: Placebo, White Stripes, and Orgy. I'm a big fan of Tool, Chevelle, Rammstein, and other hard bands, but I like Spiderbait b/c it is different and enjoyable to rock out to.
