Although we have many versions of the Christmas story for children, Jeannine Q. Norris' retelling in verse is especially poignant. All mothers are awed by the birth of their children and Mary was especially in awe of her "baby" who would someday be a king. Tim Ladwig's illustrations truly capture the beauty of the relationship between mother and child as presented in this Nativity story told in poetic verse. This book is perfect to be read aloud to children from pre-school to grade 1. Second and third graders will enjoy reading the text themselves as will expectant mothers. Tonight You Are My Baby is a gift waiting to be unwrapped and would make a wonderful addition to any family's Christmas collection.

Tonight You Are My Baby is a board book version of the 2008 picture book by the same title. The attractively illustrated little book will appeal to gift-giving grownups. The lengthy text has an adult tone, as in: "I pray for strength as all mothers sometimes do / And try to understand what will be asked of you." Some of the concepts are abstract, such as: "I look for answers in this crystal, chilly night." The viewpoint is adult throughout. It's a beautiful stocking-stuffer for a new mother. For toddlers, consider something more child-oriented, such as HarperFestival's older Christmas in the Manger.

TONIGHT YOU ARE MY BABY reads like poetry with lyrical language, and a repeating refrain, "Tomorrow you will be King, But tonight you are my baby.

What sets this book apart from other nativity stories is that it's told from Mary's viewpoint. "I kiss your tiny fingers and little perfect head, Lay you in the manger that tonight will be your bed."

I read it through twice, and on the third time simply looked at the gorgeous illustrations. This book would make a nice Christmas gift for the preschool set.

The premise of the book is unlike any book I've ever seen for kids. The story is Mary talking to her newly born baby Jesus. It is such a simple book with appropriate illustrations -- and -- not only did my 3 year old son enjoy it, but I did as well. This is a book not to be forgotten.

I discovered this book at the library during Advent and loved it so much that I bought a copy to bring out every Christmas season. The illustrations are fantastic! My toddler loved looking through this book, even if the text was a bit too old for her toddler attention span. The text was touching to me, as an adult and as a mother. So it is a book that can appeal to many age groups, as I can use the book to discuss Advent and Christmas with my toddler, my school agers, and in time the text itself will become something my children will understand and enjoy.
I look at this book as a nice addition to my holiday books that will be used for Advent devotions. This one in particular continues to stay out and accessible through Epiphany, offering opportunities to discuss the magi as well.

FINALLY, a book for my preschool grandchildren that explains the true meaning of Christmas. Jeannine Q. Norris captures a mother's love for her baby and shares it with her young audience in a delightful way. "Tonight You Are My Baby" is the book I have been looking for and one that I have already shared with two young children nestled on my lap.
