Worth it for "Medellia" alone,
By Adam Rickards (Las Vegas, NV United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tonight Tonight (Audio CD)
This EP was part of the Aeroplane Flies High box set, and it represents another facet of the Smashing Pumpkins' sound. After the initial string-drenched epic of the titile track, we hear five songs that show off the acoustic side of the Smashing Pumpkins. "Mealdorie Magpie" does have kind of a country-ish twang to it (James Iha's influence, perhaps?), but the remaining tracks are all Billy Corgan going solo. While the songs aren't perfect (some of them feel unfinished), there are a few moments here that really stand out. "Rotten Apples" is laced with some subtle string touches that work rather well, and if you're a fan of "Disarm," then you'll probably like this song, too. "Jupiter's Lament" does exactly what it says...it laments, but it does feature some nice lyrics. "Blank" is okay, but the real winner here is "Medellia of the Gray Skies." Every once in a while, Billy could pull off a moment that was just spectacular, and this is one of those moments. His vocals are kind of echoey, but that adds to the feel of the song, and the classical-style guitar playing give this song an otherworldly quality unlike any other. This beauty is nearly matched with the closer, a solo acoustic version of "Tonight." The melody is played more slowly, giving it an aching charm that was missing from the original. This CD has some great Pumpkins moments and deserves to be heard. If you are interested in checking this out, don't wait any longer. It's completely worth it.

Out of all the singles in the box set and in that case out of all SP releases this is the most mellow. In parts it has a twangy, country sort of feel and thoughout it is beautiful. I got the box set right when in came out and this single was the saddest thing I had ever heard with track six being the saddest song. It has a lot of feeling in it. I have all their albums but all I really ever listen to anymore is the box set. Its well worth it.

This 'single' is a great way to hear billy corgan's intimate side. I say billy corgan because most of the tracks (besides the title track) are solo, just acoustic guitar and voice. The songs are not perfect, Billy's voice is gentle and a little out of tune. But each song is soft and pretty, and the ep as a whole is a nice glimpse of this facet of sp. My personal favorite is the 'tonight reprise', basically a solo version of the single. It sounds like it was recorded in someone's living room, but the beauty of the song comes through well. Bottom line: if you are a pumpkin to the core, you need this single. If you buy the albums for the hits, skip this single.

This is another one of the singles from The Aeroplane Flies High set that has a song that is one of the best of The Smashing Pumpkins and should be on the best of CD. Medellia is a peaceful acoustic song done with several guitars and with style. Definately my favorite song on here, and the re-make of Tonight,Tonight is good too. Another best of song there is "Mouthes Of Babes"(get that one on the single for Zero) which is heavy and another one that missed out on the collection.

The pumpkins during their career released a wealth of amazing music on their albums (in my view the greatest rock band of the 90s).Every track on every one of these albums lived up to a certain standard,On the same note they were never shy about showing some tracks that never made the cut.Surprisingly alot of these tracks were sometimes better than those put on record. In this case Medellia of the gray skies, although Mellon collie was packed with killer tracks there could have been room for this one somewhere along the line. The tonite reprise which is a more basic version of The album track also passes a lot of their tracks.Either way Its good that they actually released these tracks and gave the listeners the oppurtunity to hear them.

A great single...,

"Tonight, Tonight" is of course a great song, and its accompanying b-sides mix very well with it. These are all pretty good songs, and are mostly laid-back. "Rotten Apples" is a nice little sleepy song, and my favorite of the original b-sides. "Tonite Reprise" is the biggest reason to buy this single (make sure the version of the single you're buying has this song on it!). It's a beautiful acoustic version of the a-side with a slightly different lyrical arrangement. The singles from Mellon Collie all had great b-sides included on them (except 1979), and this is one of the better collections.

Tonight Tonight is one of the greatest Smashing Pumpkins songs ever. From the moment it sweeps in with the orchestra and guitars until the very end where it almost feels like one is riding off into the sunset. The b-tracks are great too for the hardcore Pumpkins fans. Awesome CD.
