Book Description

8 and up3 and up

Seek life. Chache Lavi. That's what Paulie's uncle says they must do. But to seek life, Paulie and her family have to leave Haiti-the only home that Paulie has ever known. Since forever, Paulie has run in and out of the little houses nestled under the palms, smelling cocoa-bread and playing on the beach with her best friend Karyl. But now the little houses are gone. Their wood has been made into boats-boats used to escape Haiti.

Paulie wants to stay and fight-to change Haiti into a better place to live. She wants to talk to the reporters and bravely tell the truth, like Karyl's brother, Jean-Desir. But the macoutes come with their guns and knives to stop them. And they do something so terrible that Paulie must face the truth: before the soldiers come back, they must all leave-tonight, by sea.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Temple (Taste of Salt; Grab Hands and Run) revisits contemporary Haiti in her latest novel. Governmental oppression has created dire conditions for Paulie and her relatives, who are followers of ousted president Aristide. They plan to leave their beloved town of Belle Fleuve for "Mee-ya-mee, U.S.A." as soon as Uncle completes work on their boat, the Chache Lavi (Seek Life). But when the brutal macoute regime kills her friend Jean-Desir, Paulie realizes that she must do more than flee, and she sets upon a dangerous course to make her community's plight known. Temple writes with great feeling, presenting difficult subject matter through the eyes of her fragile and ultimately courageous heroine. In spite of the terrible events enveloping her, the characterization of Paulie resonates with tenderness. Unfortunately, the author's political leanings and calls for social justice assert themselves a little too heavily in the final third of the book, stifling both plot and character development. Portions of this volume echo Taste of Salt, which was so gripping in its raw, emotional intensity; however, the novel initially impassions but then fails to satisfy. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9?Paulie has lived her entire life in the tiny Haitian community of Belle Fleuve with Grann Adeline and her uncle, the village coffin maker. By 1993, two years after the military overthrow of popularly elected Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Uncle is being kept all too busy burying victims of brute violence and starving children. He decides it is time to leave their beloved homeland and turns his talents to boat building. Paulie helps in the clandestine project, as do their neighbors, all of whom contribute supplies and support, hoping to secure passage on the completed vessel, aptly named Seek Life. In an action-packed escape, they set sail just as the macoutes are coming to confiscate the boat. This is a powerful novel that seeks to put a human face on the political and social turmoil within the troubled island nation. This is where Temple is at her best. In an elegant prose style, she captures the lyrical cadence of Creole speech and paints an affecting portrait of a proud, resourceful people trying to survive in the face of lawlessness and tyranny. She gets bogged down a bit in the discussions of social justice and the redistribution of wealth, which occasionally overwhelm the narrative. There are a few unbelievably fortuitous turns of events, but overall, Tonight, by Sea tells a compelling story that needs to be told. Whether these brave people indeed find life, or even shelter, on American soil remains to be seen.?Luann Toth, School Library Journal

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, though Taste of Salt was much better, July 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Tonight, by Sea (Paperback)
I purchased "Tonight, by Sea" hoping for the same experience I got from reading "Taste of Salt", Temple's other novel about Haiti, but this one just didn't have the power to transport me to beloved Haiti as the other did. However, it's not a bad read and does tell quite honestly of the horror that caused the exodus from Haiti by "boat people" in the 90's and that still lingers today, albeit in a more "underground" form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story, accurate picture, August 15, 2006
This review is from: Tonight, by Sea (Paperback)
I wish every body would read this and other stories like it. It was well-written and helps people to understand why there are so many people fleeing from Haiti. Stories like this help to give compassion and understanding to a beautiful island nation that is racked with poverty and civil unrest, yet only 1.5 hours flight from US soil.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dying to be free, June 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Tonight, by Sea (Paperback)
Tonight by Sea may have grammatical and orthographical errors such as "Belle Fleuve" for either "Beau Fleuve" (in French) or "Bèl Flèv" (in Creole) or stylistic inconsistencies and incongruities as in the speech pattern of the character Sadrak who is a teacher but sometimes speaks like an uneducated person. But Frances Temple's novel for young adults succeeds in capturing the atmosphere that lead hundreds of Haitian people to risk their lives in rickety boats to "Chache lavi," Seek Life in the U.S. As the story evolves, the reader is treated to an overview of Haitian History and culture and, at the same time, comes to realize that, put in the same situation, he or she might have done the same.

A story about the will to survive. A story that rehabilitates the image of the Haitian Boat People. Tonight by Sea is a story that needed to be told.
