5.0 out of 5 stars Contemplative Worship, November 14, 2007

This review is from: Tonight the Stars Speak (Audio CD)
Although I am a big fan of listening to worship music because of its ability to focus my time more on God, I have often found worship to be carbon copies of earlier successful music. Not to say this is wrong, but it does take away from the worship originality. The Glorious Unseen offers one of the most original worship collections I've heard in many years, since Ardent Worship from Skillet. The fact that almost all of the songs, except Oh Praise Him, are original, and are done in a more reflective form of worship than straightforward worship that is often pushed. I really found this album to be a great way of going into contemplative worship, because the flow of the song offers an atmosphere of calmness.

If you're looking for the usual modern worship, then you can't go wrong with music from Chris Tomlin, Hillsong United, or Casting Crowns. But if you are looking for something more original and fresh, then give this album a try. You won't come away from from listening to this album without feeling blessed and awed by the glory of God. Give it a try, and be blessed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic hunger and thirst for God...this is what it's all about in Tonight the Stars Speak, February 16, 2008

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this album, but sincerely I got much, much more than I expected. Lyrics are honest and hearfelt, really giving you a sense of desperate need for God. Ben Crist is an amazing lyricist, the production team was great, all the musicians in this project (Mark Byrd, Christine, Matt Slocum)... Great talent, but there's much more than just talent in this production. This CD goes one step beyond City on a Hill, Passion or any modern worship effort. Buy this CD, you will not regret it!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but not amazing, January 9, 2010

The lyrics are pretty good, though I wished they would focus more specifically on Jesus and the cross and not be so general. I wish a Biblical influence in the lyrics would be more apparent.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT Worship music!, April 30, 2009
This review is from: Tonight the Stars Speak (Audio CD)
Ok, so it is pretty white, pretty midwest, pretty emo at times...

BUT I JUST LOVE IT!

you either like or hate Ben Crist's voice, but if you get beyond it- the words are amazing-
and FRESH.

not very christian-ese/ism's and totally relatable... it is the type of worship music to have a beer to and go shopping at Urban Outfitters.....

there is the clear ache, the clear crying out that I love about Vineyard Music...
and the lack of judgement in the music, that i wish carried over into the actual churches... (or at lease that has been my experience)

4.0 out of 5 stars Glorious Music!, August 21, 2008

This record has already created a huge buzz among fellow musicians and for good reason. Finally, praise and worship music has been given a new sound in the form of refreshing indie-rock style praise. It is filled with beautiful layering of clean electric guitar and some subtle electronica driven by a more raw, real sounding vocal style. The melodies are very relaxing and smooth which make the lyrical content an excellent theme for the sound that this band has created. The music is overall soft and slower tempo which sets the mood for an intimate worship-listening experience. At first listen I thought the sound of the record was a little monotonous, but I've decided that, with the unique sound overall, it's what the record needs. Bottom line; if you're looking for new, refreshing praise and worship, I can't recommend this enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars A new genre: Heaven-gazing, June 3, 2008
This review is from: Tonight the Stars Speak (Audio CD)
Much Christian music tends to suffer from being "lifestyle" music, guilty of sameness and lack of dynamics. I became interested in the Glorious Unseen after reading CCM's 4-star review of an album of praise-and-worship music for those who don't like praise and worship music. I admit I've found most praise and worship music to be syrupy. The Glorious Unseen move into new unchartered territory, setting ambient music to honest, simple praise and worship messages. The end result is quite transcendent - sort of the birth of a "heaven-gazing" genre. The CCM review rightfully pegs the music as a mix of artists like Sigur Ros and Pedro the Lion. The lead vocals are closest to Adam Duritz of Counting Crows, an everyman voice crying out to God. As a whole, "Tonight the Stars Speak" unfolds as an album-length prayer to God, awash in shimmering beauty, It offers an other-worldy experience not too different from major-label artist Radiohead. This effect is best achieved on the closer, "Close To Your Heart". This is definitely the band to watch - along with recent music by Jars of Clay ("Good Monsters") and other indie artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Christian music has the ability to offer the same musical breadth as secular artists. This album though, is most important for its pushing the envelope of Christian music; though as an indie album, it will probably always remain a small-label album, but one with the power of moving mountains.

I love this cd, even though most of the songs sound the same it is still a nice album to bring you into worship. There is no doubt that this group loves God.
