5.0 out of 5 stars This album is unbeatable!
This album is just awesome; full of great songs. "All for Love" "tonight You're Mine", "Sleep With Me" and "It Hurts Too Much" are very strong, excellent songs. They are what good rock music is all about. The rest of the album is also very consistent and enjoyable. Not one bad song here. Carmen is a great writer and singer, such an underrated talent.

3.0 out of 5 stars A return to a harder edge
With more rock included than the previous outings (Change of Heart; Boats Against the Current), Tonight you're Mine re-captures some of the grit that Eric had displayed in his initial solo release and with the Raspberries. That said, the songs are fun and jam-packed with well known session players. The ballads are still here, just more evenly distributed among the rock...

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the Raspberries, but not Barry Manilow either, February 28, 2003
This review is from: Tonight You're Mine (Audio CD)
Once I had picked up all four of the Raspberries albums at used record stores over the years, I began to concentrate on finding Eric Carmen's three solo albums. I located Eric Carmen, Boats Against The Current and Change Of Heart fairly easily, and just thought it ended there. Imagine my surprise at finding this one in a cut-out bin for a dollar several years later. While I had the greatest respect for Eric as a writer and a singer, I had pretty much resigned myself to his slide from a top-notch rocker with the Raspberries to the smoother, almost easy listening crooner on his solo albums. Then I got this album home. Tonight You're Mine turned out to be the closest thing to a rock album that Eric ever made as a solo artist. There are two songs I'd consider somewhat clinkers, Inside Story and You Need Some Lovin', but they're not so bad that they drag the really choice stuff down, and not so bad that they're unlistenable. All For Love is a great lite rocker, with Eric switching gears as deftly as he did in his Raspberries heyday, while It Hurts Too Much also holds it's ground well. A surprise favorite from the album was Sleep With Me. I was never much on schmaltzy ballads, but something about this song struck a chord with me. (It probably had something to do with the fact that my girlfriend at the time liked it also.) The title track is the one that kills me. On Tonight You're Mine, is it my imagination or did Eric just rewrite Go All The Way for the sleazier, disco weary, late '70's/early '80's? It's like the girl from Go All The Way has grown up to be something of a tramp. It fits in perfectly with a lot of what I remember from this time period. (Some of it all too well.) Overall, this album turned out to be a pleasant surprise, even more so because I hadn't even known it existed when I found it. I was lucky enough to have recently picked up a copy at auction and like many of the Japanese re-releases, it sounds fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthy addition to any CD collection, May 30, 2009
This review is from: Tonight You're Mine (Audio CD)
As an ardent fan of Eric Carmen's solo work, as well as his work with The Raspberries I find this CD to be very enjoyable with a few lyrical surprises when you consider the year it was released. The title track is very well written, composed and performed and should have charted higher than it did. If you think Eric Carmen and think ballads, you should give a listen to "Foolin' Myself". The passion and conviction with which it is sung, tugs at one's heartstrings and can make one teary-eyed!

Though this was released in 1980, the melodies, lyrics and vocal presentation stand the test of time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Tough To Rate But....., May 4, 2006
This review is from: Tonight You're Mine (Audio CD)
This has always been my toughest Eric Carmen album to rate. It contains some of my favorite of Eric's solo material, and some of my least favorite. It might deserve a slight downgrade because it only has 8 songs too. (and almost another downgrade for the cover art.lol) Some of that Power-pop rock shines through in It Hurts Too Much and the title track. All For Love and Sleep With Me are pop gems and I love the ballad Foolin Myself. The other three remaining songs I don't listen to too much and I consider them among some of Eric's weaker solo efforts.

None of it is high art, just pop music; some songs better than others. If you are an Eric Carmen fan, and long for some of the harder edge in his music, then I suspect that you will like this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Eric Carmen Solo, September 30, 2006
By
IJEFF (Milwaukee, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tonight You're Mine (Audio CD)
Always has been my favorite Eric Carmen solo. Its the one record he did that captures him simultaneously at his ballad and rocking best. The ballads such as Sleep With Me and All For Love are more powerful than sappy. The rockers like the title song and It Hurts Too Much rock with the best of his melodic Raspberry days. Hard to believe this isn't available domestically, but then again it never was a big seller back in 1980. Kind of one of those records that just sort of got lost in the time warp long after power pop had died and during that transition period when disco was starting to die and punk was making a big impact. Good songs and great singing only falls short of a power pop masterpiece because of a couple of less than stellar songs. It is the record I wish Eric would try to make today.

5.0 out of 5 stars sing it from your lips, October 29, 1999

This review is from: Tonight You're Mine (Audio CD)
Eric Carman , without a doubt is our Mozart of our time, his love songs can't be matched' This cd has 'all for love' 'sleep with me' and 'amI fooling myself' which are beautiful' , the fast songs are great also from 'tonight your mine' which is more on the rock & roll side than some of his other cds but still good. I remember when this came out and I was amazed how hard the fast songs were and still the love songs were still soft, this is without one of his best song for song, its worth the money '' your ll like it I got it two times now' tony

1.0 out of 5 stars Carmen's worst album, June 14, 2002

Phyllis Diller "Phyllis" (Las Vegas, Nevada United States) - See all my reviews

Since his first solo release in the mid 70's, I've remained a big fan of Eric Carmen's music and songwriting. I've purchased all of his albums and know them well. The only album of Eric's that I do not care for is "tonight you're mine". I'm a little puzzled by the strong reviews written by other listeners . . . . just goes to show that music is truly an individual taste. Let me simply say that if you're a fan of Eric's other albums, there's a strong chance you won't like this. There's two decent songs on this album "all for love" and "it hurts too much"; but still these songs aren't great tunes.
