I am not overly impressed with the Tonka "Lights & Sound" line. My son received this fire engine for Christmas and the ladder (which is supposed to rotate) worked for about 10 min. He is not particularly rough with this toys, so I am doubtful that he broke it. Unless of course his attempting to rotate the ladder manually (as opposed to the electronic switch) broke the mechanism. I would think most children might attempt to move the ladder on their own and if this were a quality toy, that should not be a problem. So the ladder does not work. I was researching how to return this or fix it and I found out that this is a Tonka toy in name only. It is actually manufactured by a company called Funrise. Tonka has licensed their name. "Real" Tonka trucks would definitely live up to normal kid use. My son also has a "Lights & Sound" garbage truck. Relatively soon, the latch that holds the back hatch of the truck closed broke so now the hatch just hangs open. Again, my son LOVES trucks and treats his toys pretty reverently. I am just not impressed with the quality of these toys.

1.0 out of 5 stars Breaks after a month...stay away, October 13, 2005
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars

My grandson loved this toy because of the sounds and the lights. A month later it wasn't working at all. We thought it was the batteries and changed them, but sure enough nothing was working. We called Tonka and then they passed us off to the company that manufactures them...P.S. I still haven't heard from them and it's been almost 5 months. It's not worth the money! I highly recommend you buy some other brand of firetruck for your lil'firefighters

4.0 out of 5 stars boys love it, January 16, 2007
This review is from: Tonka Lights & Sound Fire Engine (Toy)
The classic fire truck-- large enough, with some details, for my boys to feel like it's a real fire truck. I like the fact that it doesn't move on its own-- you have to push it. The sounds are not too loud (some may disagree, but I've heard louder). ladder hasn't broken yet, but it is pretty thin plastic, so it will probably break eventually. Doors open to put small characters in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Fire Truck Find for Two Year Old Twins!!!, September 19, 2008
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars

My two-year old twins, who are VERY hard on their toys, simply HAD to have a fire truck, complete with LIGHTS and SOUNDS, for their 2nd bday... well, after months of searching high and low online and in stores, this fire truck fit the bill. Me and the boys, and grandpa too, couldn't be happier - the durability and fun factor has been fabulous - highly recommended!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it!!!, May 14, 2007

My three year old daughter was very picky about exactly what she wanted in her fire truck. She absolutely loves this. We have had no problems with durability and even have had our one year pull it around. We are thouroughly happy wih it and my doughter is now in love with it and every real fire truck she sees. As an added bonus it came with a DVD of real firemen. She loves this and has watched it several times. After watching she also now says "Don't play with fire." I could not be happier with our purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars My son loves this toy, October 16, 2009

My son received this about a year ago at his 3rd xmass. It has been heavily used. I has spent some time living outside. THe ladder and hose has come off, the lights and sound no longer work. I was thrilled when the lights and sound stopped working. My son doesn't miss the peices that have come off. He still loves his firetruck. It was a gift, so I didnt have to pay for it, but I do think $[...] is a lot for a plastic toy. If it had been wooden I dont know if it would have survived its time outdoors as well, (it was snowed on a few times). However if I had to replace it , I would rather spend the $[...] toward a wooden toy firetruck, and limit its use to indoors. You will not miss the lights and sound.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple and fun, January 6, 2009
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Tonka Lights & Sound Fire Engine (Toy)
It's a nice starter firetruck. It seems durable enough to withstand child play. The doors open and close and it comes with a little fireman. The ladder also slides up and down. Be careful though, the ladder doesn't feel very durable.

My daughter likes it!
