i love tanks, and since this vehicle is track driven, i bought it for myself more than for my son. The controls are realistic. a good track vehicle should have 2 motors and they have to be strong since the friction of the belts soak up a lot of power. This tonka is tough but the motor(s) are underpowered, and with 4 size C batteries, the motor needs more torque to drive this heavy plastic vehicle. My son likes it when it is going up and down the terrain made by cushions covered by a blanket.
The shovel is poorly designed since it can only go up and down by about 1/2 inch from ground.
The controls are good and to a certain point educational. one learns about how to navigate these track vehicles.
The plastic is thick, rubbermaid type and of good quality.
The molded model overall is very detailed.
The noise it makes may get irritating after a while.
It is a big toy vehicle, for the amount of plastics, size, noises, maneuverability, it is inexpensive; i consider that it is a good buy.
Since it is really made by Funrise instead of Hasboro, do not expect this to be real tonka tough.
I rate it as average but the fun factor is still there; one must note that this is not for sand box play. How much fun?? I ended up buying the digger (excavator) also just for the sake of showing my son how these vehicles work and put stuff to the back of a mighty dump.
it is fun for me and my son.

Why I will never by a plastic Tonka again!!, April 15, 2003

My 31/2 year old son received this for Christmas. He loved it and wanted to play with it all the time! However, the tracks on the bulldozer came off after only a few days..we put them back on, but they continued to come off frequently. The sound of it was WAY TOO LOUD!! Fortunatly, the sounds quit working after 2 months (even with new batteries) Eventually the plastic on it cacked, and I pitched the whole thing. I'm sticking to the metal trucks from now on!!

My parents bought this for my two year old. And while they think it's great - they can go home and not listen to it! It's very noisy and not very durable - forget the sandbox. While my son will play around with it, moving the controls, etc., when he wants to really play, out come the Ertl Tractors and the good ole non-motorized Tonka trucks. Buy two non-motorized items for the price of this one - no ear plugs necessary!
