Parents may love playing with this realistic forklift as much as kids do. The heavyweight lifter can be moved forward (a red light flashes at the top of the cab) and backward (the red light flashes, accompanied by warning sounds), while two more controls enable the forklift to lift up and down, as well as move forward and backward. It is particularly exciting to put the truck to work by maneuvering the lift controls and then releasing the included wooden pallet and plastic barrel. This is a truck to grow into, as it takes a great deal of skill to get the wooden pallet onto the forklift. A 3-year-old tester practiced mastering the forward and reverse control, yet was confused about how to keep the forklift from banging into the wall. Four AA batteries are included to power this well-made lifter, which measures 15 long by 8 inches high. --Lauren Bernard

My forklift-crazy son had already broken a smaller, cheaper forklift, so I bought this with some trepidation. Well, it has turned out to be one of our best toy purchases. The forklift operates with ease, has controls that mirror a real forklift, and seems to be nearly indestructable- both the motor and the body. He often pushes it the opposite way while the motor is engaged, but to my surprise and relief, the toy has suffered no ill effects. And despite being nearly 40 pounds, he manages to ride the thing! I don't know how it takes the abuse, but it has, and it still looks brand new (its big and heavy enough that he doesn't try to throw it - that helps).

There is only one issue that is a bother that is the levelling of the forks to pick up the pallet is so stiff that when the four year old pushes the bar back to level or forward to drop off the pallet the force need to move the bar is such that the entire load shifts and falls off. So the toy needs some adjustments in this area.

We have a friend who has the older model of this, of which our son fell in love with. We decided to purchase one, but did not realize that Tonka removed a few key features on the new model. The new model only raises and lowers the fork lift and a light that you can turn on. The older model did this, plus a motorized tilt function, a controller that moved the toy front and back, and an option to put the toy from motorized movement to a free wheel push.

My reco is to go onto E-Bay and purchase the older model. Tonka cheaped out on the new model. You can tell the difference between the two models by the back levers. The new one has two and the "cool" older one has three.
