My 2-1/2 year old son loves this game. You can switch between four vehicles and do different activities by driving around Tonka Town. 3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings about "Tonka Town"
I have very mixed feelings about the Tonka Trucks program. I use it at a shelter for abused and neglected children age six and under. I have not had any of the technical problems that other people have mentioned. We run this program on an old, donated computer with Windows 98, and it does just fine (except for jerky graphics in an introductory sequence about an airplane)...

My 2-1/2 year old son loves this game. You can switch between four vehicles and do different activities by driving around Tonka Town. My son especially likes chasing and bumping the bad guys out of town as a police car, putting out the fires as Hook and Ladder fire engine and the race game. There are different levels of the game you can progress through and you can get a certificate everytime you finish a task. I only wish that the game allows you to stay at or adjust to a difficulty level instead of automatically bumping you to a harder level when you finish a task. Although this game may be too easy for kids over 6, I think it's great for pre-schoolers.

I have very mixed feelings about the Tonka Trucks program. I use it at a shelter for abused and neglected children age six and under. I have not had any of the technical problems that other people have mentioned. We run this program on an old, donated computer with Windows 98, and it does just fine (except for jerky graphics in an introductory sequence about an airplane). In fact, it has the most impressive graphics that I have ever seen in a children's program. The children who are at least three-and-a-half years old enjoy it; for some of the more aggressive boys it is by far their favorite program. Even adults get a kick out of playing it for a while. The problems are these: (1) it does not seem educational at all. I think I have a broad view of what is "educational"; I'm not one of these people who think "educational" only means learning letters and numbers. I like educational programs that let children play, such as Reader Rabbit Toddler. However, although the Tonka Trucks claims to be educational, I just don't see any educational value. It only teaches children to play video games, which they learn all too soon anyway. (2) It encourages aggressiveness and bad behavior. There is a big emphasis on "bad guys." One of the activities is to intentionally crash the police car into "bad guys." After they get done playing on the computer, the children want to crash their tricycles into other tricycles, and generally push and act aggressive. (3) Some children (especially girls) find this program boring. (4) On the other hand, some children enjoy this program too much. It gets them all worked up. Of course, the children I use this with are extra susceptible to getting worked up, but there have been problems with children crying and kicking the computer when they use this program, either because they had trouble winning the races, or because they were angry when their time on the computer had to get over. (5) Finally, this is the least important, but the program is much too slow to get started. It goes through way too many title screens and introductions. Whoever designed this program never waited for this program to get started while sitting next to a couple of hyperactive four-year-olds while the program loaded on a old computer. However, having said all of these complaints, I would still have to say that this program is a real technological marvel, and many children enjoy it immensely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Graphics!, April 30, 2006
This review is from: Tonka Town (CD-ROM)
I bought it for my 3 year old. He loves to drive the car around, but still does not know how to follow the arrows. My 7 year old daughter loves the game! I really liked the graphics and the buildings talk even when you bump into them. Really fun ran on XP no problems! Get this one it is much better than the old tonka games condtruction and search and rescue (those have poor graphics).

I bought this game for my almost 3-year old son because he loves when his sisters are on the computer, but he really could not play their games-don't tell him that though! I bought this for him and now it's his older sisters that want to play with him!

My three year old can't get enough of these Tonka Trucks. The race track with the oil slicks and bumper spin outs keep him laughing. I love to run the trucks through the grass or even into the bushes. You can't make a wrong turn in this town! Every car has it's own adventures, so be sure to try different cars. We love it!

My son, who is almost 4 has had this game for about a year now. He still enjoys it after all this time. I find it a bit boring after a while because there are only so many different missions, you start repeating them over and over again - my son, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have that problem. My son's favorite parts are bumping into everything as everything talks, fishing the trash out of the river with Boomer and racing the trucks against other Tonka trucks in the race way. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because you must listen to the instructions for each task, there isn't any way to click through them - my son obviously gets tired of listening to them over and over. While there isn't a lot of educational value to this game, it does teach kids how to use the mouse and follow instructions.
The game does require the disk to be in the drive and runs fine in my Vista computer.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Little Guy Got To Control A Cartoon!, October 13, 2009

We LOVE this game at our house! I bought it for my son who is just over 4 years old. We just fixed up an old laptop for him to get him off the Wii and TV and get him some experience on a computer. The graphics are SUPER CUTE, like my title says, it looks like you are controlling the car in a cute cartoon! You can create multiple profiles, with a license plate with the child's name and play as one of 4 vehicles, the police car, fire engine, tow truck or dump truck. You get to drive all around, using the mouse, and visit all the town's sights to complete tasks. The tasks are easy enough to prevent frustration, but not too easy for a little guy. You get certificates for finishing the missions. I am very happy I invested $10 in this game, as we have been having a hard time finding games that have good graphics and easy but fun games for pre-schoolers. We would definitely recommend this one.
