Book Description

March 20, 2001
Presented each year by the American Theatre Wing, the Tony Award is one of the theatre's most coveted awards, bestowed on professionals for "distinguished achievement" in the theatre. The Tony Award is the comprehensive listing of all the nominees and winners who have reached this pinnacle of success, from the first Antoinette Perry Awards in 1947 to the most recent in 2000. Also included is a complete history of the award and of the American Theatre Wing, as well as comments from winners such as Audra McDonald, Susan Strohman, Faith Prince, Tony Walton, Tommy Tune, Lloyd Richards, and others.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Although there is no such indication, this work is an updated edition of Stevenson's 1994 work of the same title. As with the earlier edition, this volume chronologically lists all of the nominees and winners of the Tony Award, from the first Antoinette Perry Awards in 1947 to the 2000 ceremonies. For each year, the categories are listed with each nominee and the title of the relevant play or musical. The winner for that category is indicated with a star next to the name, and a name/title index follows. There are a few drawbacks to this reference: there are no cross references or quick findings lists (e.g., best play), and there is no commentary, which would add value as it does in Mason Wiley's Inside Oscar: The Unofficial History of the Academy Awards (LJ 3/1/86) and other film award books. Also, the list itself is identical to that found on the American Theatre Wing's official Tony Awards web site (www.tonys.org), which also features a search engine and text adapted from Stevenson's book. However, libraries will still want the print copy for convenience, so this is recommended for all theater collections. Anthony J. Adam, Prairie View A&M Univ. Lib., TX

4.0 out of 5 stars Are these OFFICIAL mistakes?, May 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Tony Award: A Complete Listing of Winners and Nominees with a History of the American Theatre Wing (Paperback)
The good stuff first.

It is wonderful to have an updated version (up to and including the 1999-2000 season--CONTACT/COPENHAGEN). I find great pleasure reading and referencing, so this data compiled in a gorgeous book is very exciting and well worth the purchase.

A few drawbacks.

This book is FILLED with mistakes. For example, 1994 Featured Actor in a Play nominee GREGORY Itzin is listed as Gary. Not too big a deal but... 1998 Featured Actress in a Musical labelled as "Featured Actor." (Poor Audra.) Worse than all this however is that the 1995 Director (Play) is listed WRONG. If you buy this, please note that Joe Mantello did NOT in fact win for LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! While his work may have been wonderful, the award went to Gerald Guittierez for THE HEIRESS.

Now, it is one thing to make a simple mistake. However, when I first noticed this regretful misrepresentation on the tonys.org website, I wrote an email to the server to point it out. No change and no response. I wrote again and still received no response.

Conclusion.

This book is WELL worth owning. But it should NOT be taken as the be-all end-all source. Try getting video recordings or asking a knowledgeable friend.
