Gr. 5-8. In this brief, accessible title in the Extreme Sports Biographies series, Sorensen describes skateboard superstar Tony Hawk's climb from "hyper, skinny" child skateboard champ to adult legend. Introductory chapters are culled extensively from Hawk's autobiographies, including quotes from Hawk and his family members. Throughout, Sorensen emphasizes that Hawk owes his triumphs as much to fierce determination and the extensive help of family and friends as to natural talent. Supporting sections offer a brief history of the sport, descriptions of Hawk's current Boom Boom Huckjam tour, and feature boxes on female skateboarders and basic skating moves. A mix of photos shows Hawk throughout his career; appended resources include a glossary and a list of the top skating magazines. This high-interest title will draw browsers and reluctant readers as well as student researchers. Gillian Engberg
