4.0 out of 5 stars Tony skates again on the DS, October 28, 2007
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Tony Hawk Proving Ground (Video Game)
Tony Hawk has had a pretty good track record on the handheld circuit over the years, and Tony Hawk's Proving Ground for the DS is no different. Returning to the series' roots after last year's lukewarm Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, Proving Ground provides everything that's made the series so great in the first place. There are hordes upon hordes of tricks, transitions, and grinds to learn, while the story elements have been better varied than what we found in American Sk8land. Other than that, everything is still basically the same as what's been seen before, like spelling SKATE and taking on classic locations, but there is no denying that Proving Ground provides great bursts of fun. The Wi-Fi and multiplayer options are fun, and the game offers a great, grunge-fueled soundtrack to boot as well. The only downside to Proving Ground is that as a whole, there isn't really anything super new here, and there are a few, brief, graphical glitches that become noticable. Other than that though, Tony Hawk's Proving Ground is a great, portable, excursion of the long running series that DS owning Hawk fans should definitely check out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great game for the Hawk fan on the go, October 24, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Tony Hawk Proving Ground (Video Game)
I bought this game a day or two after it came out, and I can easily say that it is the most fun that I've had with a Tony Hawk game in recent memory. I'm a major fan of the series, and I have been with it ever since the first one came out on the PS1, and this game reminded me of a more-improved version of THPS 1.

The game crams 15 pro skaters, 7 massive levels (each 3x larger than those on American Sk8land), and a respectable selection of licensed songs on to the DS cartridge. Both American Sk8land and Downhill Jam on the DS were great, but both were missing something. This game has the perfect melding of the best qualities of the previous two games, while adding a new level of realism. In this game, the developers threw out the cell-shaded graphics for more "realistic" ones that truly separated it from all the other portable Hawk games of the past. The little things like hearing gravel underneath the wheels, and bits of real graffiti on the walls really helped the game. And the levels are so big that it'll take you a long time to see everything that the developers put into the level.

There were some major changes in the gameplay as well. The addition of the Aggro Kick (think power boost from Downhill Jam) really helps the gameplay in stringing tricks together in a more "realistic" manner, while not making it too easy to get hundreds of thousands of points in one combo. Another major change was in the way the various skaters played. In previous Hawk games, each skater had their own strengths and weaknesses, but you could change that by maxing out the stats of every skater, making them all play the same. In Proving Ground, you can't do that for any of the skaters except of the "Create-A-Skater" that you use in the Story Mode, hence this is the first Hawk game where I actually had to pay attention to which skater was the strongest in certain fields. The developers also added a lot of online features, but I don't go online on my DS, so I can't comment on whether those are any good.

Long story short, if you love Tony Hawk, and you have a DS, you should definitely go out and buy this game.
