Solo players will skate to win the world championship, with over 100 moves available to score points, including slides, grinds, and landing tricks. A split screen allows players to compete against each other. During this head-to-head mode, you can score style points, race between obstacles, or play tag. If you opt for graffiti mode, both players compete against each other by "tagging" objects while performing their tricks. A replay mode is available for players to view highlights at the end of a game.
The level design is enormous, with 10 interactive courses, including skate and pool parks, half pipes, and a downtown area. Each skating environment is filled with secret places, shortcuts, and obstacles. Once you get the moves down, you can perform a trick off of just about any object that you see. Tony Hawk is not the only star in this game--the music stands strong on its own. Cool cuts come from Primus and the Dead Kennedys--which can be inspiring during the frantic onscreen action. While game control is relatively solid, there are some minor problems in tight areas.
This title is so large it is overwhelming, given the enormity of levels and available moves. However, persistent skate pros will master this game with a little practice. (Fortunately, there is a practice mode to scrape your knees on.) --Kasty Thomas

Perhaps one of the best games I ever played. My roomates and I rented it for five days and were completely engulfed the entire time. There was always someone playing the game. Combining amazing lifelike graphics with a killer soundtrack this game will capture you to. That and the ability to do tricks like 900's, kickflip Mctwisits, double or even triple 360 kickflips, and even a 1080 ollie (I fell of a cliff and just spun; and actually landed it). After renting it, I went right out and bought it. You'll love it. Buy it.

We got the kids PSX for Christmas, and my 11-yr.-old son insisted on Tony Hawk which he's played at friends' homes. After a few hours of watching, I asked him to show me, his 37-yr.-old mom, how to play...I was hooked! Although at first I wiped out more times than I was upright, I did get the hang of it rather quickly. It's a lot of fun to try all kinds of crazy tricks and not risk a broken neck. The two-player options allow you to compete head-to-head on a split screen, take turns trying to "out trick" each other in "Horse," or just take turns. Compared to most video games, I don't consider this one to be violent. Just a few minor blood splattering and grunting when skaters crash. My nine-yr.-old daugher picked the game up quickly as well and I can already see that we are all going to be jostling for our turns on this fast-paced, always different game.

When I first played the demo for the game, I couldn't figure it out. The controls seemed to make no sense at all. But, despite not knowing the controls, the game was still a blast. I waited out the 2 months till its release and then played it the day it hit stores. First thig, I read the controls. Simple, I thought! I took the CD, put it in my Playstation and fired her up. What waited for me was a revolution in way skateborading games are made. Since the only skating game to hit PS-X was EA's yawn-inducing StreetSk8r, this game was truely a treat to die-hard skateboarding fans like myself. The controls, though first seeming simple, proved to be challenging and entertaining. Try to fit as many tricks as you can in your air time is a challege we're all willing to take. The massive level design and numerous level challeges make this game one of the few that make you lose track of time. You keep wanting to play more, and seeming as the more goals you acheive, the more levels and decks you unlock, the game does not lose it shine fast. This is one that even after you beat, you'll still love to play. It could most possibly be the best skateboarding game ever made!
