5.0 out of 5 stars Review from a college kid in Florida
Perhaps one of the best games I ever played. My roomates and I rented it for five days and were completely engulfed the entire time. There was always someone playing the game. Combining amazing lifelike graphics with a killer soundtrack this game will capture you to. That and the ability to do tricks like 900's, kickflip Mctwisits, double or even triple 360...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good as a collectors item but won't hold up today
This is one of those games that was amazing for its time. It somewhat holds up today and since the price is so low I recommend buying it. The main reason is though for collector and nostalgic value. Compared to the sequels its nothing special.

That and the ability to do tricks like 900's, kickflip Mctwisits, double or even triple 360 kickflips, and even a 1080 ollie (I fell of a cliff and just spun; and actually landed it). After renting it, I went right out and bought it. You'll love it. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A versitile family game, December 25, 1999

We got the kids PSX for Christmas, and my 11-yr.-old son insisted on Tony Hawk which he's played at friends' homes. After a few hours of watching, I asked him to show me, his 37-yr.-old mom, how to play...I was hooked! Although at first I wiped out more times than I was upright, I did get the hang of it rather quickly. It's a lot of fun to try all kinds of crazy tricks and not risk a broken neck. The two-player options allow you to compete head-to-head on a split screen, take turns trying to "out trick" each other in "Horse," or just take turns. Compared to most video games, I don't consider this one to be violent. Just a few minor blood splattering and grunting when skaters crash. My nine-yr.-old daugher picked the game up quickly as well and I can already see that we are all going to be jostling for our turns on this fast-paced, always different game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tony Hawk Now Making Impact On Gaming World, December 3, 1999

When I first played the demo for the game, I couldn't figure it out. The controls seemed to make no sense at all. But, despite not knowing the controls, the game was still a blast. I waited out the 2 months till its release and then played it the day it hit stores. First thig, I read the controls. Simple, I thought! I took the CD, put it in my Playstation and fired her up. What waited for me was a revolution in way skateborading games are made. Since the only skating game to hit PS-X was EA's yawn-inducing StreetSk8r, this game was truely a treat to die-hard skateboarding fans like myself. The controls, though first seeming simple, proved to be challenging and entertaining. Try to fit as many tricks as you can in your air time is a challege we're all willing to take. The massive level design and numerous level challeges make this game one of the few that make you lose track of time. You keep wanting to play more, and seeming as the more goals you acheive, the more levels and decks you unlock, the game does not lose it shine fast. This is one that even after you beat, you'll still love to play. It could most possibly be the best skateboarding game ever made!

This is one of the best games out there. The graphics, the game play, and the over all sound and feel of the game are real. There are a million different tricks you can pull for points. You can create your own combos for even more points. Two player with split screen makes the game even more enjoyable for that late night after hours party entertainment. There are different game types to play in. H-O-R-S-E is one of the best. You pull a trick and the other person has to beat the points you made. You can pull tricks on 50' rails, to half pipes. Skate pools, to just strait insane jumps in a variety of different skate parks. You can even change the name from HORSE to something like BI**H. So, when you win, the screen will tell your opponent, "Player Two, You are a BI**H!". I could be more creative, but I'm sure they wouldn't post it. Anyway, things like this all throughout the game make it a 5 star game by far. I would give it 10 out of 5. Ahhhhh....So.....much.....fun.......

I have never been a fan of sports games, and I have always hated snowboarding games (such as Cool Borders and 1080). When my friend introduced me to this game I was sure I would find it extremely dull and boring. However, after five minutes of playing I was hooked. This is one of the most fun and challenging games I have ever played. It has great control, music, graphics, and fun 2-player modes. No matter how long you play for there are always new tricks to learn and new skills to master.

This game is definately one of the greatest playstation games out there. The only problem is that since I have started playing it I have not had time to do my homework!

If you are viewing this page and do not own a copy of Tony Hawk I strongly suggest buying it right now. You won't be dissapointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars! More like 10!, July 2, 2000

Please don't dismiss this game as only appealing to hoodlums who vandalise park benches and loiter everywhere, etc... This is a game that can be fun for anyone who has limbs and eyeballs! Bring this game over to grandma's and she'll even love it. You see, once you pull off a cool trick, you'll say "I want to do that again!" Then, in your attempt to repeat that trick, you'll do one you like even better, and so on... One of the great things about this game is that the controls are very easy to learn and even someone who has never picked up a controller in their life will find themselves in awe of what their character is doing onscreen. Even the music gets you into it, but you will soon find yourself putting on your own music instead as the tracks get monotonous after a while. Other than that, this game is perfect. Also, it progresses at a reasonable rate. What I mean is, as you complete certain objectives you will advance to more difficult challenges, but since you can practice all you want, they will not expect too much out of you too fast. This may just be the most enjoyable sports game ever created. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Game For Everyone, October 21, 2000

Everyone has a type of video game that they prefer. For some it is adventure, others horror, some sports games, and others old school arcade games. Well, irregardless of your age or your gaming preference you will love Tony Hawks Pro Skater. This is one video game that everyone seems to love. My parents (who are in there mid-50's) like the game just as much as 13 to 20 year olds (the amazon.com recommended ages). This game is fun.

The basic idea behind Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (or THPS) is that you can choose from a variety of Pro Skater's and with them play different levels to gain points to open up competitions and more difficult levels. The games levels include a warehouse, a school, a mall and many others. There are three competitions in the game, the last of which is in a fun and suprising secret location. There are many different tricks that your skater can preform. Also, as you play your skaters skill level increases allowing you to do more difficult tricks and trick combinations. You can choose the skateboard and wheel colors of your skater. Also, each skater has certain "special" tricks that are worth high point values (These tricks can only be done while the Skaters "Special" Meter is up and flashing yellow). The game also has a great sountrack.

This game is the best. BUY IT, enjoy it, and then see if you can stop playing it...I bet you won't be able to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Purchase this game, NOW!, April 15, 2001

"clayford" (Nashville, TN United States) - See all my reviews

Honostly people, this is the best game on Playstation today, and will most likely take ages to outclass. I first learned of this game from a review in a magazine, but I wasn't really into skateboarding, so I decided to let this one slide. Coincidentally, my cousin brought over his Dreamcast version, and one night later, I was off to buy this game at the nearest location possible. In this game, you play as one of 8 of the world's greatest pro skaters, as you compete in different levels and competitions. By doing different moves on your board (this is done by moving the left joystick in any direction, and pressing either square or circle or triangle - square does flips, circle does holds, and triangle does different grinds). In your skating adventures, you compete to win "tapes" which are used to unlock new boards, new levels, new characters, and competitions. To win the tapes, you've got to board your way like a pro through different levels, trying to destroy certain objects, beat high scores, spell the word SKATE, and by finding a hiddin tape (obviously hiddin in the level). It may sound kinda simple, it may sound complicated....but trust me, it's ALL GOOD! And even if you do manage to find someone who hates this game, who could hate the great tracks of music it features, from REAL bands? Okay, but here's where I'm gonna get picky. Sometimes while pulling off moves that you need to get you that top score, you'll fall over on some un-foreseen object, or you'll be goin for a quarter pipe, and a car will hit you (yes, there are cars!). But that's really gettin picky! The only other real draw back I can find is that it's too addictive! Trust me and buy this game!
