Product Description

Amazon.com Review

The original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was so close to perfection that the idea of dramatic improvements in the sequel seemed pretty far-fetched, but Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 offers so much more that it almost puts its predecessor to shame. The graphics are vastly improved, there are tons of new tricks to pull off, and the game has more secrets than the CIA. Even if you played the original to death, there's enough new stuff here to keep you occupied for months to come.

Pro Skater 2 is all about customization. You can still play as one of the real-world skaters represented in the game, such as Steve Caballero, Elissa Steamer, and Mr. Hawk himself, but the real fun comes from creating your own skater and rising up through the ranks. As you conquer the massive skate parks included in this release, you rack up cash to be spent on pumping up your stats or adding new tricks to your repertoire. You can specialize in verts, concentrate on your street skills, or take a more balanced approach, and the addition of manuals will let you string together tricks from either category to rack up some amazing scores. The custom options extend to a complete skate-park editor that is easy enough to use that we were creating basic arenas in less than 15 minutes. It's a thoughtful addition to one of the most purely entertaining games ever released. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Create-a-Skater option lets you decide on everything from the tricks you use to the shoes you wear
  • Easy-to-use park editor allows for complex creations
  • Beautiful graphics and smooth animation make this one of the best-looking sports games on any platform
Cons:
  • Getting the hang of manuals takes some time, but once you do, watch out

Amazon.com preview

When you're creating the sequel to what many felt was 1999's game of the year, there's a lot of pressure to outdo your past glory. The folks at Neversoft, makers of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, appear to be up for the challenge.

For starters, people who have mastered Tony Hawk's Pro Skater will be able to take their skills to a new level. A new trick that's called a manual allows players to balance on the forward or rear trucks of the skateboard. Manuals bridge other already-established moves and combos, and make it possible to rack bigger scores than ever before, while they add a whole new level of challenge for veteran players.

In the original game, an open space between rails, bowls, cars, or ramps provided a small breather and a chance to survey your surroundings. This time, you'll be encouraged to manual between such spots, and thereby increase your point total. But the manual isn't an automatic movement; it requires balance and dexterity. Therefore, you'll have less time to take in your next opportunity and be much more likely to miss it the first time through.

Overall, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 serves up extra helpings of some very nice goodies. For example:

  • Better characters, and more of them: Last year's models look sick compared to the larger skaters and better textures of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Also, there are new playable characters: Steve Caballero, Eric Koston, and Rodney Mullen have been added to the cast.

  • More tricks: Lip tricks now include awesome new handplants, rock & rolls, and stalls. As it should be in a game (and sport) that has more and more "star power," signature riders now have more of their signature moves. Add to this the aforementioned manual, and you pretty much have got it all.

  • More locations: New scenes are carved out of New York, the Skatestreet in Ventura, California, and updated locales in Miami and Philadelphia. There will be a total of eight--all big, all bold. And you're not even tied down to the good ol' U.S. of A. What would you say to grinding through the streets of France?

  • More music: So far, demos have included Anthrax's version of Public Enemy's "Bring the Noise," but Activision's efforts won't end there. Even with all of the goods that this game has, it would be a supreme letdown to freeze out the top music tracks.

The park creator is back in the new game. Neversoft also has added a create-a-player feature, so that you can enhance the existing pros and turn them into new skaters. Also, a new customization system lets you skate to earn enough money for new duds and accessories. Features like this, when added to what returns from last year, make Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 a must-have for anybody on the planet. --Todd Mowatt --This text refers to the PlayStation version of this game

5.0 out of 5 stars WooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooW, November 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (Video Game)
I think this sequal to the first Tony Hawk's is better by far. the graphics are much more realistic and you can even make out the features on the skaters face which you couldn't really in the first. There are so many more tricks to master and with loads more levels and hundreds of tasks this game will keep you on the edge of your seat all the way through. There are many more character friendly enviroments and more characters than ever before even the practices are excellent. There are many more characters to unlock including Officer Dick and Spiderman. This game is a must for all sport game fans, and even those of you who are not so interested in sports.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great game!, November 10, 2000

Awesome game. Just simply put a must buy. I've never done more then pick up a skateboard, yet still enjoyed this game. A lot. Being able to make your own skate park and skateboarder is a ton o' fun, just because you can put your own style into the game. I definitly recommend this game. The only reason I give it only 4 stars, is even though you have a ton of options in this game, it is still a skateboarding game, and to some, that might not be apealing.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best games for Dreamcast, January 6, 2002
This review is from: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (Video Game)
I own the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater for Playstation and I was so hooked on that game I thought it could never be topped. Then I got a Dreamcast and I bought Tony Hawk 2 not knowing what to expect, and I was very, very satisfied. Tony Hawk 2 gives the word fun a new definition, the skate parks are better designed than that in the original game, and the create a park and create a skater options are great additions, plus Spider-Man is a secret character. You can't beat this game, it's addicting, fun, and if you own a Dreamcast you should own this as well.
