Go back to the old formula,

This review is from: Tony Hawk's Underground 2 (Video Game)
I have always been a huge fan of the Tony Hawk series of video games, ever since the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (THPS). I have seen many improvements to the original formula over the past five years, but the last couple of games in the series have been disappointing. For me, the high point of the series was THPS 4. It had a ton of challenging goals, awesome levels, and is the one game in the series that I will pull out if I just want to goof around.
THUG 2, on the other hand, is a shorter game (I beat story mode on normal difficulty in one weekend in between midterm study sessions), has relatively forgettable levels, and shamelessly promotes antisocial behavior. To add to the depth of the game, a classic career mode was added, with the two minute timer and classic goals such as collect S-K-A-T-E, pro scores, and hidden video tapes, all within the same levels as story mode. Nice idea, but I always hated that stupid two minute timer. I still feel that I can give THUG 2 a pretty good rating because it still had the same addicting gameplay as other games in the series and they added a new "focus mode," which allows you to switch to bullet-time in special mode, giving you better control. It was also kind of a cool addition to give you a pro teammate and two special guest skaters for each level, each with their own unique goals. One of the special guests in each level had a different type of ride, like a go-kart or a motorized wheelchair. Nice idea, but I hated the control on some of these rides, especially Steve-O's mechanical bull. Bottom line: This game is too short and not as fun as some of the other games in the series. There were only 6 new levels (I believe) with a few classic levels added in. Trying to play through on "sick" difficulty mode may add to the replay value, but you're still playing the same goals, just more frustrating.

Another in a Series of Great Skateborading Games,
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Tony Hawk's Underground 2 (Video Game)
THUG 2, another in a series of mindless, yet entertaining skateboarding games, brings to life a new breed of Tony Hawk magic, total and complete mayhem.
Tony Hawk's Underground 2 is the sixth edition of the world's most famous and best selling skateboarding games, and like it's predecessers, along with some new editions to the gameplay and graphics, creates a totally new story, one involing Bam Magera, a master of destruction and confusion. Even the gamers of little knowledge about the world of skateboarding could enjoy this game, a game in which, despite abandoning the old goal of becoming a legendary skateboarder, holds true to the Tony Hawk spirit, and despite some minor flaws, could easily entertain fans of most ages for many hours on end. The story begins with you, a skater, being chosen to participate in what is known as a World Destruction Tour, involving two teams, headed by two men, Hawk and Magera. You must travel around with your team across the globe, from Germany to Spain to Australia, to create as much destruction and mayhem as you can, while also, along the way, riding crazy vehicles with a variety of guests, doing outrageous stunts, and of course, putting up your mark in graffitti anywhere you want. Maybe you enjoy the classic Hawk games, the games like Tony Hawk 1, 2, and 3, where you simply skate around freely and at your own will, doing simple, yet challenging goals, unlocking levels, and building up your skater to become the best of the best. This partof the game, known as "Classic Mode," is just as fun as the story mode, allowing you to play in both new and old school levels, and even a secret level at the end, in which, if completed successfully, unlocks a variety of new skaters and videos for you to enjoy. The game barely misses a perfect score from this avid PS2er, simply because of a few minor flaws. The first of which is the varying degrees of difficulty in the modes. Before starting a game you are asked what difficulty you want, and even though you may of chose easy or normal, you still get very complex and difficult goals, and ones in which may seem close to impossible to complete. Other times, though, you recieve goals that are so easy that they are completed in a matter of seconds and without much thought or strategy, though for some of you this may not necessarily be a bad thing. This game, even if you don't enjoy skateboarding, should at least be rented, and played, for you may soon find yourselves outside on your own, trying to perfect your own version of the Hawk kickflip. Note: This game is not for younger children as it does involve some very crude and sexual humor, including the throwing of beads at women in the streets during Mardi Gras, thus resulting in...well...take a lucky guess. For parents monitor your child's use of the game, and maybe, despite the rating of Teen (ages 13+), wait a little while before allowing your son or daughter to partake in the playing of this somewhat suggestive game.

THUG vs THUG 2.... A Tough Match!,
By Matt R.M. (Kettering, OH USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Tony Hawk's Underground 2 (Video Game)
Well, this game was great, my 2nd favorite in the THUG/THPS series. Of course, my favorite is THUG. They're some great improvements, such as new levels (including Australia and Berlin), new characters (including Ryan Sheckler, Shrek, and Phil Margera), and a brand new storyline. You, Eric Sparrow, and some other great pros are kidnapped and thrown in a van. The van unloads, and the story begins. Team Bam and Team Hawk are on an adventure called The World Destruction Tour. Six continents filled with tons of way you can, well, cause destruction! In every level, there's a guest skater and a secret skater. The guest skater, once you find them, are now yours to skate as whenever you want. The secret skater has a vehicle which you can ride in to cause even more destruction and maddness, but stays in the level you found them in. Overall, the Story Mode is short. It took me less than 24 hours to beat it on Easy. But there is also, new to THUG2, a classic mode. Play like THPS games, with a 2-minute time limit, and try to get a High Score, Pro Score, Sick Score, collect Skate, Combo, and more! Plus, you can unlock more than 5 new levels in Classic Mode that you can't unlock anywhere else, like Old Skool levels including THPS3 Airport, THPS School, and more! Oh yeah, and if you like Old Skool levels, you'll be pleased to hear the first level in Story Mode is an expanded version of the THPS Warehouse! Basically, buy this game even though the Story Mode is short, there's plenty more to do!
