Editorial Reviews

Brahms' first musical experience had been playing an upright piano in the brothels of Hamburg where he had grown up, and at the end of his life he had lived as a bachelor in Vienna having his every need satisfied by the prostitutes of the city whom he always affectionately described as his ‘little singing girls'. This film is a celebration of unabashed, life-enhancing, sexually explosive music.

Format: DVD
This movie is inappropriate for all audiences--certainly for those under 18, in that it contains multiple instances of full frontal and dorsal nudity, both male and female.

The movie is also inappropriate for those who seek historical accuracy. For example, several scenes show Clara Schumann performing late piano works of Brahms, e.g., his Op. 117 #3 (completed in 1892), at which point Clara would have been in her early 70s--not the nubile beauty in her late 20s or early 30s that the film depicts. And what instrument is she shown playing, decked out in full mid-19th-century regalia? A late-model Hamburg Steinway that was produced in roughly the same year as the movie--a piano that wouldn't have existed until about 150 years after the flower of her youth had faded! (Such a scene is as anachronistic as a scene would be in an Abraham Lincoln biopic if it depicted Abe, bedecked in top hat, composing the Gettysburg Address on an Apple computer while consulting his Cabinet on a cellphone.)

Whether Brahms's old age was devoted almost entirely to cavorting about with naked prostitutes, and his youth to romping nude in the woods with his paramour-du-jour, as the film would seem to imply, are hardly those aspects of Brahms's life that make it worthy of a biopic.

The only positive aspects of the film are that it can boast of a ravishing soundtrack that has many representative selections from Brahms's works, all well performed (though again, with late-20th-century instruments and usually late-20th-century dress--rather disquieting in a film that purports to be historical), and that several excerpts from Brahms's letters are read.

don't like porn movies, this was obviously to the taste of the director, I don't have much use for it
