This review is from: Tony Parenti and His New Orleanians (Audio CD)
This is George Buck's first recording for his Jazzology label from back in 1949. George had cashed in his war-bonds and brought this outstanding little band to the Belltone studios in New York city so they could create the type of hot jazz that George loves. It was Wild Bill on cornet, Jimmy Archey on trombone, Tony Parenti on clarinet, Art Hodes on piano, Pops Foster on bass, and Arthur Trappier on drums.
The music sizzles from the beginning, it never fails to generate the heat that was such an essential ingredient to its' success. All the numbers are done up tempo, yet there is a relaxed quality and feel to it. This recording has easily withstood the test of time and has been continuously available in one form or another since 1949. As a first recording for the independant Jazzology label, it proved an auspicious beginning and paved the way for the survival, in many respects, of traditional jazz a la Condon. Earthy, gritty, and whiskey-driven, it's still worth a listen.
