Editorial Reviews

Review

Recommend this book for women's groups, for those looking for light reading with meaning, or as a gift for any woman who needs a spiritual facelift: a smile.
(Elizabeth Wisz CBA Retailers 2011-08-01)

This is a great collection of short meditations based on humorous stories from life, her own as well as others. Yet each stories contains a truth to help the reader deal with stress. This book is a delightful read.

Too Blessed to Be Stressed: Inspiration for Climbing out of Life's Stress-Pool by Debora Coty will have you laughing so hard, and sitting there wondering why you are stressed out to begin with. I absolutely loved this book; it is for anyone who finds their self-dealing with health issues, family problems, financial difficulties, etc. I thought this book was very humorous, I was laughing throughout the entire book, she has way of writing that draws you in and makes you laugh while you're actually learning something at the same time. The chapters in the book are short and at the end of each story there is a bible verse and questions, which I found to be truly thought provoking, as well as being very inspirational. She has a way of making you feel like you're talking to your best friend, understanding exactly what you are going through, she shares her own stories with you, which makes you laugh even harder. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to embrace God's grace while coping with life and the stresses it can bring to us, with a whole lot of laughter and inspiration to go with it.

I tried and tried to finish this book. First, I am not a stick in the mud Christian, but I found this book offensive. If you are looking for a book to laugh with and to inspire you, look elsewhere. I realize this is a humor book, but there are ways to be humorous without it being crude. There were a few chapters, maybe 3, where I thought were both funny and inspirational. About halfway through, I decided to toss it. (See number 4 below as to my final decision to not finish it.) The scriptures are taken out of context and frankly, I felt that the Lord was demoted to a funny topic.
.
1. She uses the verse from Colossians 3:17 which reads "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him." This chapter is devoted to us hearing about her husband's "Eye watering belches" and "potent flatulence" after he begins over doing his new juicing habit, which includes garlic. The verse is almost used as a joke because it gives you no answer how to truly do what that verse says in a biblical way. I think there would have been many more funny options to get the point across without having to hear about her husband's stomach issues.
2. Page 41 describes how our calendars can be too full. O.K. Give me something godly to do to fix that. Even add humor!! But, Instead, we hear about calendar constipation where our calendars are clogged and plugged. She goes on to say we need an activities enema. Again, help me to fix my too full calendar and put my priorities straight. I didn't need all of the enema stuff and how that works.
3. Page 91 uses the verse from Revelations 3:15 that says "I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot" and uses it to talk about menopause and hot flashes.

From the moment I opened the cover of this book I began smiling. Debora Coty is one of those writers that makes you feel like she is one of your best friends. She's open, honest, and vulnerable about life and the craziness that goes along with it, and she approaches it with a wonderfully developed sense of humor. The devotions are short, but every one of them has caused me to laugh out loud. The text is full of wonderfully fun quotations and thought provoking questions that help you tame the stress without hurting your brain.

In addition to being a daily devotional reading, I've found myself picking this book up whenever I needed a smile or a breath of fresh air to take me away from the insanity of the day. This is one of those books I intend to leave out on my desk regularly. I highly recommend it for anyone who has a tendency to feel like life is just a bit out of control.

This is the second book I have purchased by Debora Coty. I bought "More Beauty Less Beast" in 2012 but just now read it in December of 2013. I loved that one so much that I had to see what else she had to offer.

In "Too Blessed to be Stressed", and "More Beauty Less Beast", Debora makes you feel like you've known her for years. It's almost like she is allowing you to read her diary or journal. She adds humor to those things that, at the moment, are almost devistating. The way she describes some of her "mishaps" have made me just crack up! She teaches you to see God in everything....and that's one thing I had stopped doing. This book is a great reminder of that.

Reading these two books, "More Beauty, Less Beast" and "Too Blessed to be Stressed" has been so refreshing. I've done many bible studies and have read countless devotion books over the years. I've even studied very in depth Christian material. But I have to say that reading these books has been the extra push I needed to get me out of a really long "spiritual dry spell". Reading this book along with the Bible, praying, and having someone praying for me is a wonderful combination.

If you're not ready to laugh and make a little fun of yourself, you may not like this book. Since I have read it, I have recommended it to all my friends. God bless Debora for her obedience. Well done!

Debora M. Coty has a breezy, chatty style that makes you feel like you're having coffee with her at the kitchen table. She draws connections between her wacky, Erma Bombeck-style domestic adventures and Scripture to provide life lessons that help us cope with everyday stressors. I give 4 stars rather than 5 only because this book doesn't dig to quite the theological depth I look for. Other people may see that as a benefit, though. ;)

Parts are laugh out loud funny. A friend gave me a copy after my surgery and I was feeling sorry for myself. Great therapy.
