Book Description

September 1, 2009
A fascinating look at how mothers and their adult daughters have formed a greater friendship than generations past?and whether or not their should be boundaries.

No relationship is more complicated than the one between mothers and daughters? especially today, when a cultural shift can cause a longer period of time of overlapping interests before the traditional adult markers of marriage and family. As a result, these young women are developing deeper bonds with their own mothers, a relationship that sometimes mimics friendship. But are these close bonds healthy? Is it time to cut the umbilical cord?

In this eye-opening book, Linda Perlman Gordon and Susan Morris Shaffer explore the modern mother-daughter relationship in all its glorious complexity. Combining a brilliant sociological analysis with fascinating stories of real- life women, Too Close for Comfort? provides a rich, provocative look at the ways mothers and daughters get it right, how they get it wrong?and how they can happily maintain being friends as well as mothers and daughters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for mothers and daughters February 22, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
At first I was skeptical about this book, but the farther I read, the more I get out of it. It's a little difficult to read, but if you use a highlighter (like I always do) and make notes in the margins, you can re-read those parts you don't quite get. Daughters need to know where they came from, their history with the rest of the women on earth. It seems that this generation of women don't care and "don't have time". Maybe I can slip it in in little pieces...or tie her to the clothes line!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible February 14, 2010

This is the book I have been looking for. My relationship with my teenage daughter has gone through it's good and it's bad and this book helps me understand the bad a lot better. I especially appreciated the stories of other mothers and daughters and the experiences they share.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome Reassurance December 25, 2012
Format:Paperback
"Too Close For Comfort" has reassured me that I am not losing my mind or that I am an inadequate, sub-standard mother of my two 30 and under adult daughters. With humor and an eloquent perspective, the authors provide tremendous reassurance and guidelines that are ever so helpful. It is thought provoking and spot-on as it identifies what for me has been an emotionally difficult life transition. It is easy to read and the bibliography is a rich resource for further study.

As the mother of a grown daughter, I found this book incredibly well written and illulminating on this most important subject. I really learned so much from the book and would highly recommend it. It is a great book on the subject and I really learned a great deal from it.

I only recently discovered the complexity of the mother/daughter relationship which I thought I had been, until now, able to overcome. Until I read this book which enlightened me so much. An excellent tool which I immediately shared with my daughter in the hope it will also help her in dealing with her own daughter.
