Product Description

A fascinating look at how mothers and their adult daughters have formed a greater friendship than generations past-and whether or not there should be boundaries.

No relationship is more complicated than the one between mothers and daughters- especially today, when a cultural shift can cause a longer period of time of overlapping interests before the traditional adult markers of marriage and family. As a result, these young women are developing deeper bonds with their own mothers, a relationship that sometimes mimics friendship. But are these close bonds healthy? Is it time to cut the umbilical cord?

In this eye-opening book, Linda Perlman Gordon and Susan Morris Shaffer explore the modern mother-daughter relationship in all its glorious complexity. Combining a brilliant sociological analysis with fascinating stories of real- life women, Too Close for Comfort? provides a rich, provocative look at the ways mothers and daughters get it right, how they get it wrong-and how they can happily maintain being friends as well as mothers and daughters.

5.0 out of 5 stars I bought one for all my friends with daughters, January 26, 2010

I love this book. It helped me communicate what I have struggled to discuss with my 28 year old daughter for some time. While we have a basically good relationship, I have so much guilt when I say no to her and she doesn't make it any easier. When I look at her face and see how disappointed she is with me, I get angry. Sometimes I feel so unappreciated-
I read the book and then gave it to her. She read the book and we were able to both express ourselves and learn how to be close but not too close. I no longer hold the same frustration and resentments. We have a much cleaner relationship.

This is the book I have been looking for. My relationship with my teenage daughter has gone through it's good and it's bad and this book helps me understand the bad a lot better. I especially appreciated the stories of other mothers and daughters and the experiences they share.

As the mother of a grown daughter, I found this book incredibly well written and illulminating on this most important subject. I really learned so much from the book and would highly recommend it. It is a great book on the subject and I really learned a great deal from it.
