The inherent beauty of music is that it can touch us on several levels. However in our fast-paced, instant-gratification, and "never scratch the surface" world, we are often afraid to dive deep and let the music swallow us whole. Sylvia Tosun takes that bold leap on her debut album, as she guides us through the celestial spheres of our brains, the romantic depths of our hearts, and then finally taps into our primal pulse where passion rules. With her angelic voice, Tosun takes you close to the sun to feel its warmth and radiance. Once you are under her spell, she takes you even closer where you virtually feel the heat of the flames before she brings you back to the cool water. As a writer, Tosun's innate sense of melody and rhythms pervade this album. As a performer, her dramatic persona and vibrant voice will have you flying through a flurry of emotions. When you add in the expert and symbiotic production of Harold Stephan of Amelia's Dream; the sympathetic cast of world-class musicians; and the talented and insightful co-writers from October Project, you end up with six beautiful, well-crafted songs that will renew your spirit and force you to reexamine your everyday life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slick production, great music, epic, September 4, 2003

If I were a teacher, I'd have my students write a movie to this soundtrack. One minute you feel as if your careening across the desert, the next minute you're in France, and the next a late night gypsy rave. Not that the words have anything to do with this. Its the vibe the music presents. The words are images unto themselves, holding up vivid fantasy in audio stereoviews to your mind's eye. Nice. tight. professional.

Anyone who is interested by the spectrum and risk music can take in general, will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soothing, Relaxing, Under-rated..., March 29, 2009
This review is from: Too Close To The Sun (Audio CD)
I first discovered Sylvia Tosun when I just had to delve into the liner notes of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Beethoven's Last Night, to find out who that amazing voice was on the very last track. I just can't figure out why she hasn't been picked up by one of the big name lables.

At first, I was disappointed by the number of songs on this disk -- it ended way too soon. (There are only 6 tracks, which probably also accounts for the lower price.) The selection is a wonderful sampling of her vocal range and variety, showcasing her talents in a variety of original songs. The lyrics are as compelling as the melodies and rhythms, and the samples on the directory listing should only wet your appetite for the entire song.

The first song, Runaway, is nothing like any of the old songs of the same name by other artists. The title track will stir memories of the loves that made you feel that way, too. The last song ends rather abruptly, and very profoundly, if you're paying attention to the words.

I'm so glad that Jump In has finally come out, and love it as much as this one. Four of the tracks from this disk are repeated on the new album, with two versions of Sleepless. Nevertheless, I am still very glad to have both, and I'm sure you will be, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too close to the sun, August 8, 2008

I recently discovered Sylvia Tuson in the past month. Her song "Runaway" can be found on the compilation SIRENES: THE POWER OF THE FEMALE VOICE which was put together by Sleepthief's Justin Elswick and an associate. I immediately fell in love with the lush melodies of the song as well as Sylvia's vocals. Because of the song "Runaway", I bought the EP TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN in which the song can be found on. The cd is only 27 minutes long but it is a nice beginner for me. The music reminded me of Delerium and Sleepthief with its lush pop melodies awashed in gentle electronic beats and subtle acoustic melodies. Sylvia's vocals reminds me of some the women who have collaborated with both Delerium and Sleepthief. Her vocals are polished and goes down very easy. I loved all six songs. The cd always goes by too quickly whenever I listen to it. I definitely plan on trying to get a hold of Sylvia's other cds, past, present, and future. She is an artist who definitely deserves more exposure.
